  1. Warwicks Water - Thatcham 0700 - 1300 Warm, calm and overcast (though a thunderstorm rolled in just after I packed up ) AT 16º-18ºC 2 Tench: 5lb 14oz, 2lb 2oz. Doz+ Perch: all fairly small. Reports of big stripeys had me starting my autumn perch campaign on this rarely fished and somewhat neglected pond. It was always going to be a case of trying to avoid the small perch and hope a biggie turned up. However I thought I'd hit the jackpot first cast - my float hadn't even cocked properly when it sailed away and I was into something putting a good bend in the rod. I was just thinking 'well that was easy' when the smaller tench rolled into the net. Not quite what I was after but an autumn tinca is always welcome. There then followed a couple of hours of small perch - nothing to trouble the scales and some barely bigger than the whole lob they took. The tench weren't finished with me however and for the second time I thought I was into a good perch - though this would have been a REALLY good perch! Not a Perch Also not a Perch!
  2. Harris Lake, Marsh Farm Fishery, Milford 1500 - 2300. Hot and sunny with a stiffish southerly breeze - clear, warm evening. AT 28ºC and still 17ºC when I left. 7 Tench; best 6lb on the nose plus a variety of sizes (1X5lb+, 2X4lb+, 2X3lb+, 1X2lb+). 2 Crucians; 2lb 6oz, 1lb 13oz & 1lb 11oz. 20+ Roach up to 10oz. 3 Rudd - all around 8-10oz, 1 Perch- small. The return of summer put me in the mood for some more crucian fishing - though in truth they didn't get much of a look-in amongst the tench. Both smaller crucians in daylight but once it started to get dark the tench moved in - despite me giving them NO free offerings! Thankfully tinca time was over by 10pm and my only bite in the last hour came from the bigger crucian. Biggest tench from here since 2020....
  3. Alders Lake - Thatcham 1730 - 2230 Bright and breezy. AT 20º - 15ºC. 4 Bream: 4lb 8oz, 4lb 5oz, 4lb 2oz, 3lb 10oz. 4 Tench: 4lb 3oz, 3lb 3oz X2(different fish I think!), 2lb 11oz. 2 Carp: unweighed but both around 1½lb. 6 Perch; - most around 6-8oz. 2 Rudd. A very busy evening with bites and fish from the off - smallest Bream was actually first cast!. Bites tailed off after dark - only one fish after 9pm - exact opposite of what usually happens. All fish on float fished prawn (of course!). Annoyingly I also got smashed 3 times by the lake's rogue (they were never meant to be stocked in here) carp - the third time after scaling up to a 6lb bottom - which was still snapped like cotton! Still - one of my best returns on this lake - good thing I remembered my stink bag for my net and mat!
  4. Willows Lake - Thatcham 1730 - 2230 Warm and overcast - clearing. No breeze so copious amounts of DEET required to keep the mossies at bay! AT 23º-17ºC 2 Tench; 4lb 7oz & 4lb 3oz. 2 Carp; 8lb 6oz & 6lb 11oz First evening this summer on here when the carp have been a nuisance. Along with the 2 I landed I lost another 3 to hook pulls - two after lengthy fights and getting close to netting - ho hum they weren't what I was after any hows! Thankfully there was a lull in carp interest for around an hour either side of 9pm when the tinca's got a look-in and I had 2 fish in 2 consecutive casts just as it got dark.
  5. Harris Lake - Marsh Farm Fishery - Milford 1430 - 2300 Hot and sunny with a warm southerly breeze all evening - very welcome as it kept the mossies and dew at bay. AT 25º and still 18ºC when I left. 5 Crucians: 3lb 4oz, 2lb 14oz, 2lb 10oz, 2lb 3oz, 1lb 13oz. 9 Tench - various sizes from barely a lb up to a best of 4lb 14oz. 16 Rudd - all handsized with 3 netters of around 10-12oz. 5 Roach& 6 perch - all small. Fabulous evening's sport. Only my second trip over to Milford this season and whilst the pre-occupation with tench in one of my local club lakes has saved me a bit of petrol money this summer - it has been at the expense of catching another of my favourite species - crucians! So today was all about rectifying that - and the evening got off to a great start with the 2-10 the first on the scene - just as I was taking a first bite into a sandwich for my tea! I then had to wait a couple of hours for my next bite (from a fish!)- but it resulted in a new lake best Crucian for me! I have been fishing this lake since 2007 and had a 3lb 3oz fish on that first visit - which I haven't bettered from here since! There then followed a frenetic evening as it got dark and as the tench moved in - though there was still time for 3 more crucians - the last one (and smallest) part of a double hook up just before 11pm which got me into a bit of a tangle and prompted an end to proceedings - though I'd already said to myself 'pack up next fish or 11pm whichever comes first'!
  6. Willows Lake - Thatcham 1800 - 2300 Overcast and breezy - clearing to cloudless skies as it got dark (the exact opposite to the forecast I watched in the morning!!) AT 19º-13ºC 6 (!) Tench: 5lb 15oz, 5lb 12oz, 5lb 8oz, 5lb 3oz, 4lb 11oz, 4lb 7oz. 1 Carp 7lb 13oz. 1 perch (small) Another splendid evening's tench fishing. (And another 3lb of blackberries collected which are being converted into jam as I type!) All the action after 8pm (again!) save for the micro perch. The period from 9-10pm was particularly frenetic. Yet again gratifyingly few carp putting in an appearance and with the added bonus of the clear skies which afforded sight of a couple of early Perseids - including a particularly spectacular one which left a 2-3 second afterglow. (They peak this weekend so fingers crossed for some clear skies - conditions for viewing should be very good with a waning moon affording dark skies.) Pics of a couple of the 5lbs - a male of 5-08 (bottom photo) and a bigger female with a very impressive caudal fin...
  7. Willows Lake - Thatcham 1800 - 2300 Overcast and very breezy all evening after rain all afternoon - clearing to reveal a very bright full moon for last hour. AT 17ºC - 14ºC. 5 Tench: 6lb 0oz, 5lb 9oz, 5lb 5oz, 4lb 14oz, 4lb 6oz. 1 Carp 9lb 4oz. 1 Perch; small. Very lively evening - with bites from the off - started with maggot while my prawns defrosted but that only took a few minutes and there after it was chopped prawn - float fished lift method, all evening. Gotta love the quality of the tench coming out of this lake this summer - of the 11 tinca's I've landed only 2 have been under 4lb. Bites stopped at 10pm when the moon rose (I know co-incidence is not causation ) 3lb of blackberries also harvested! Biggest of the night:
  8. Willows Lake - Thatcham 1800 - 2300 Cool, overcast and drizzly with a more substantial shower as it got dark. AT 14ºC - 12ºC. 2 Tench: 5lb 11oz & 4lb 4oz. 3 perch - all small. As expected, bites at a bit of a premium with conditions more akin to mid autumn than mid July. Pretty pleased then, to come away with 2 nice tincas and have an evening when I was NOT getting bothered by cyprinus carpio. And, as last week on Alders, 8pm appeared to be the 'witching hour' with the biggest tench arriving shortly after 2000 and the 4lber (a hard fighting male) 20 minutes later.
  9. Alders Lake - Thatcham 1800 - 2300 Warm and overcast with a stiffish breeze for the most part - which kept the mozzies at bay. AT 21ºC - 18ºC 4 Tench; 3lb 11oz, 3lb 2oz, 3lb, 2lb 13oz (all 3 smaller ones feisty hard fighting males). 2 Bream; 4lb 11oz & 4lb 8oz. 2 Perch, 2 Roach (all small) Well that was an entertaining evening! All the action between 8pm and 10pm - no bites at all before or after. I started off (as I usually do) alternating between chopped prawn and maggot on the hook - but when the bites arrived maggot just resulted in perch or roach so quickly reverted to a prawn only approach for the rest of the evening. I don't catch many bream on prawn so the two fish I caught will increase my confidence as a bait for them! First blackberries of the summer also collected. Note to self - remember to bring stink bag for my net when I expect/hope to catch bream or tench!
  10. Willows Lake - Thatcham 1800 - 0000 Warm (ish), overcast with drizzly rain to start - clearing and becoming quite cool. AT 21ºC -> 12ºC. 1 Carp 8lb 1oz, 1 Tench 3lb 8oz. A frustrating evening on the float. Lots of dithering, dips and rises and lots of striking at thin air for the first 3 hours! When I did eventually connect with something it was the right weight - but the wrong species! 8lb+ tench have been coming out of here this summer and I'd really like to get one as my PB is under that! Darkness eventually resulted in a tinca but it would prove to be my last bite of an otherwise disappointing evening!
  11. Harris Lake - Marsh Farm, Milford 0730 - 2315 Hot, sunny and sultry. AT around 25ºC all day and still 18ºC when I drove off at a little before midnight. 11 Tench: various sizes from quite small bars of soap up to 5lb - biggest 5lb 3oz. 2 Crucians 2lb 4oz & 1lb 2oz. 30 Rudd - most handsized - with a few a bit bigger, the one I deemed worthy of the scales went 14oz. A dozen roach - all small. Annual gathering of the Internet Angling Club - to remember our departed friend Paul and raise a few pounds for Duchess of Kent Hospice. Unusually for an IAC fish-in everyone caught fish - there were tench aplenty. Crucians on the other hand were thin on the ground with only 4 anglers catching them during the day (mine came after dark). Best crucian of the day fell to Howard with a fish of 2lb 9oz (closely followed by Glenn - who usually blanks! - with a fish an ounce lighter). Howard also won in 2020 and is now the first to win this twice - so I'll be accepting bribes to give him an unfavourable swim next year! I caught 9 of my tench during the heat of the day but stuck it out with grim determination to get a cru and was rewarded with 2 in 2 casts a little after 2200 - the smaller fish followed by another exactly double that next cast - should have packed up there and then as all I got was more tench - and was then smashed in the lilies - prompting a pack up.
  12. Alders Lake - Thatcham 1800 - 2300 Fresher than recent days and cooler. Quite breezy.AT 21º-15ºC. 1 Bream: 4lb 14oz. 1 Tench; 1½lb. 1 Rudd - a netter of around 8-10oz, 1 Roach - small. 5 Perch - handsized. Alders campaign gets off to a sluggish start - though it started promisingly with the nice rudd first cast. Dusk brought quivering lilies and raised expectations - fulfilled with the tench a little after 2200. The bream arrived an hour later just as I was packing up - resulting in a very wet and slimy net in the car home!
  13. Willows Lake - Thatcham 1500 - 2230 Warm with sunny spells - clearing at dusk with a nice southerly breeze to keep the mossies off. AT 21ºC or there-abouts for most of the afternoon. 3 Tench; 6lb 8oz, 5lb 3oz, 1½lb. 3 Carp; 10lb 11oz, 7lb 8oz, 6lb 11oz News that the carp in here weren't showing very well (post spawning malaise?) had me chancing my arm for the tincas. Went all out with my default tench tactics - prawn sections float fished lift method style and it wasn't long before I was having my hook straightened by a muscular carp! The next time my float went under it resulted in the 10lber - and whilst I was rather pleased to land it on my float rod I thought I was going to be in for an evening of carp frustration. I need not have worried, as the sun sank behind the trees - putting my swim in shade - the tench showed up - with all 3 in quite quick succession. The first up being the 5lb male. The 6 my biggest for 4 years and my best from an NAA club water since 2010.
  14. Alders Lake - Thatcham 1800 - 2200 Calm and cloudy to start with clearing skies and dropping temps for the last hour (and a very heavy dew!) AT 17º -> 11ºC (But felt much chillier in the damp conditions...) 1 Bream 5lb 2oz, 1 Tench 1¼lb, 1 Rudd; 11oz (looked bigger!), 1 Roach - hand-sized. 6 Perch all smallish. Nearly all the excitement in the first 90 mins with the tinca pretty much first cast. The only fish to come after it got dark was the lovely rudd and the roach. Had intended to stay longer but I started catching signals and the cool, damp air was starting to chill my bones (time to dig out those thermal trousers) A complete contrast to the start of the evening!
  15. Alders Lake - Thatcham 1830 - 2230 Warm and muggy despite clear skies - though there was a few large spots of rain as I left. AT 26->19ºC. 4 Tench; 4lb 15oz & 3 around 1¼lb ± a couple of ounces . 1 Bream 4lb 7oz. 1 Roach; 'half decent' at around 6oz. 2 Perch; small. A game of 2 halfs with all the action coming after 2030 as it got dark and not a hint of movement to the float before then -at least there were no crayfish around! Pleased to see the tench putting on a few ounces, very nearly my first ever 5lber from here! Also had time to bump a couple - one of which I'm pretty sure was a foul hooked carp (my hook came back with a scale ).
  16. Harris Lake - Milford 1530 - 2330 Hot, overcast and sultry - though the clouds parted somewhat after dark to allow me to see a couple of long streaky Perseids. AT 33°C on arrival and still 20°C when I pulled into my drive at home, at a little before 0100. 7 Crucians; 4 over 2lb - biggest 2lb 15oz - with all the other 2lbers around 2-04 - 2-06. 10 Tench; all over 3lb - with half over 4lb - best 2, 5lb 11oz & 4lb 11oz. 4 perch - small, 3 rudd - micro small - all took a bare hook as I was shotting my float at the start of the session. A crucian first cast was followed by a slow but steady afternoon -which in itself was a surprise as I didn't expect any bites until dusk. The hour from 9-10pm was frenetic however - with bites and fish coming thick and fast! The 5lber was the last fish landed - and then, suddenly the swim went completely dead. Fished on for 90 mins without a hint of a bite and whilst I had intended to stay until the early hours - I can take a hint!
  17. Willows Lake - Thatcham 1900 - 0000 Warm, calm evening with high cloud clearing enough to have a good view of the International Space Station which passed overhead twice whilst I was on the bank. AT 25º -> 15ºC. Shirtsleeves all evening though copious amounts of DEET was required to keep the mossies at bay! 6 Tench: best 3lb 4oz, with another just shy of 3lb the other 4 around 1¼lb ±4oz. 1 Crucian; 1lb 7oz. 2 Carp; 8lb 4oz & 7lb 13oz. 1 Perch - small. A super evening, successfully NOT catching carp! Defaulted to my usually MF tactics of float fished prawn segments fished just off a lily bed and expecting to be annilihated by a carp at every cast. But every time the float dipped or (more usually) lifted (as I was using the lift method!) it resulted in a welcome tinca - or an even more welcome crucian. Nice to see the stocking of these a few years back starting to pack on some weight - first one I've had of this batch over 1lb - a super little fish with a typical high back demonstrating the phenotypic plasticity this species is famous for. By 2230 bites on the float had dried up (opposite to what usually happens) and I started to flick bits of bread into the margins by my feet. It wasn't long before there were slurps and swells as it got mopped up and it was simply a matter of dapping a bit of bread with a hook in and hanging on!
  18. Alders Lake - Thatcham 1830 - 2230 Warm, overcast and muggy (for the most part - skies clearing and getting cooler and dew-y when I packed up). AT 22º -> 16ºC 1 Tench; 4lb 2oz. 1 Carp: 2lb 8oz. 1 Roach - handsized. It's that time of year when venues are chosen for the quality of the blackberry picking! 3lbs picked in a little over ½hr - which has already been converted into Jaq's wonderful bramble jelly this morning - was followed by 4 hours watching a mainly stationary float! Did at least land 3 of the 4 bites I had - the 4th resulted in a rather unequal battle with a largish carp who plodded up and down the central channel for quite a time. I could make no impression on it and eventually it decided enough was enough and headed for the lillies where it threw the hook - which I miraculously got back!
  19. Alders Lake - Thatcham 1930 - 2300 Warm with high broken cloud - affording a super view of the Super 'Buck' Moon when it got dark. AT 25º -> 17ºC. 2 Bream: both 3lbers but not by much. 1 Tench 1¼lb. 2 Perch: small An evening with a slow start and a livelier finish! I nearly packed up after an hour or so as I was being totally plagued by crayfish and whilst they did a quick disappearing act - usually a good sign that something that would find a signal a tasty snack has appeared on the scene - by the time 10.00pm rolled around I just had the 2 modest perch to show for my perserverance. Thankfully the ever increasing gloom brought some action from my target species - 2 bream, 5 minutes apart were topped off by a last cast tinca turning a poor evening into a par one!
  20. Harris Lake - Marsh Farm, Milford 0600 - 0000 5 Tench; biggest 5lb 4oz the others 3-4lb. 7 Crucians; 5 over 1lb with a couple over 2 - best 2lb 4oz. A dozen+ rudd - most tiny with one of around 4-6 oz. Annual IAC get together in memory of Paul - a chance to catch up, raise some money for Duchess of Kent Hospice and this year, put a face to a name - Stephen Jackson who has been on the IAC list forever ventured down from Carlisle for his first IAC fish-in. A slow day angling wise - however and somewhat unusually for an IAC event most people actually caught a few - tench admitedly for most, but even Crucians turned up in quite a few different nets. Even Glenn caught - a tench AND a crucian! I had a few daylight fish as well so didn't have to rely on fishing on after dusk for angling redemption (which was just as well as it wasn't as reliable as expected!) The winner of the trophy for the biggest crucian was decided early doors with Geoff's first cast fish of 2lb 12oz though this was nearly eclipsed by a fish from Alex in the next swim just fractions of an ounce lighter! Even the weather behaved itself! Geoff's winning fish.
  21. Harris Lake - Milford 1500 - 0030 Warm, overcast and muggy - though the promised thunderstorms never materialised - thankfully. 26ºC and still 15ºC when I packed up - though felt cooler in the breeze that had picked up in the evening which did at least keep the dew and mozzies away. 12 Tench: 8 over 4lb including 2 over 5 - biggest 5lb 14oz. 6 Crucians; all 2lbers best 2 - 2lb 13oz & 2lb 10oz - the others between 2-02 & 2-06. 2 perch and 6 micro rudd. Back over to Milford and with the crucian box well and truely ticked on Monday I was on a different lake with tincas' as my quarry. Bites slow but steady during daylight hours - but I knew things would pick up at dusk. By 2130 I'd caught 5 tench - in the next 2 hours I added 7 more plus all the crucians - frenetic angling with the 5-14 the last fish caught! Then at 2330 bites suddenly stopped. And whilst I had intended to stay a liitle longer - an hour without a bite was a big enough hint that the 'main event' had come and gone!
  22. Johnson's Lake - Milford 1430 - 2315 Bright and sunny with a cooling NEly breeze which did a great job of keeping the mozzies at bay! AT 20º -> 10ºC. 5 Crucians - in order of capture: 3lb 7oz, 3lb 9oz, 3lb 8oz, 3lb 1oz, 4lb 2oz (NEW PB!) 8 Tench - biggest around 2½lb the rest less than half that! 1 Roach (1lb) (!), 4 Rudd - all between 6-10oz and a micro perch! WOW! Annual pilgrimage here pays off spectacularly - my first ever 4lb crucian and the first time I've ever had 5X3lbers in a session. All caught on small chopped prawn segments and all during daylight hours (the 4lber was landed just before 7pm) which meant I had even higher expectations for dusk. Alas, the tench moved in and proved to be a bit of a menace! (the carpers were complaining about them when I arrived!) A real Red Letter Day. Tired but elated this morning!
  23. Harris Lake - Marsh Farm, Milford. 1500 - 0000 Cool, calm and clear evening. Lovely evening for star (and planet) gazing - Jupiter is in oppostion at the moment so is particularly bright. AT a chilly 9ºC when I packed up - felt a little autumnal! 9 Crucians; All bar one over 2lb (and even that one was only 2oz shy). Best 3: 3lb, 2lb 12oz, 2lb 9oz. 2 Tench; 4lb 9oz & 3lb 13oz. 4 Rudd. Five hours without a bite (save for the micro rudd which annoyingly kept attacking a bare hook as I was trying to shot my waggler at the start!) followed by a couple of hours of frenetic activity. As so often happens here the dinner bell rang just as it got dark and by 10pm I'd had 10 fish - with the only bite after this time (nearly an hour later) being the bigger tinca. All fish caught mere inches from the bank in around 18 inches of water! (ie NOT where my float is in the cover pic). The fish here are used to the day ticket anglers discarding their bait in the margins and move in after closing time to hoover it up!
  24. Alders Lake - Thatcham 1800 - 2200 Calm, clear evening - affording excellent views of Jupiter, Saturn & a very bright half moon. Temps dropped rapidly when the sun went down - resulting in a very heavy dew. 2 Tenck; 2lb 13oz and a 'pounder'. 1 Bream; 4lb 2oz. 2 Roach; both 'netters' and whilst unweighed would both have made ½lb easily. 15 Perch; various sizes from micro to a couple that were half decent and in need of the net. Plagued with perch for the first hour - but thankfully as light levels dropped so did bites from the stripeys - allowing other species to get a look in. Was smashed twice by big carp which was a bit of a pain for a short session - especially after playing one for a considerable time and just starting to harbour thoughts that I might actually land it - before it decided it had other ideas (maybe IT was playing me!). Roach were a nice surprise - and last 2 fish caught - well into the dark.
  25. Alders Lake - Thatcham 1800 - 2200 Cloudy with a fresh NEly breeze. AT 15/14ºC but felt considerably chillier in the wind. 2 Bream: 5lb 7oz & 2lb 15oz. 2 Tench: 2lb 10oz & a 1lber. 3 Carp: All well over a lb - in fact the one I weighed was over 1½lb (all rehomed in Willows). 10 Perch: most in the 6-8oz class. 1 Rudd: handsized. Busy evening with most of the fish coming in the first 90 mins. Only 2 bites after 8pm - but both resulted in a bream on the bank. My biggest this season - but, alas, last fish caught so net and unhooking mat went home covered in an inordinate amount of slime!
