Welcome Andyboy. Big question! Are you talking about a charter boat or your own? Are you likely to fish areas with strong tides or not? How much do you want to spend? For general purpose boat gear that will do OK most places, and good value, buy a Ron Thompson/Okuma combo 20lb class (or 30lb if you are charter fishing offshore) - very reasonable from places like Glasgow Angling Centre mail order; line to suit; leads from 4oz to 16oz, simple running ledger link, swivels, 2/0, 4/0 and 6/0 hooks and some 40lb line for the trace. Have a few trips with that lot and learn from what others are doing on the boats, then buy more/different as you go.
