dawia true flight rods

im new to fly fishing and want to know what the craic is with rods and wot not, so here goes another one of those threads youve seen all to often.

after going carp fishing with my dad in france its brought back memories from fishing for pollock in scotland, so i decided to pinch a few of me dads old rods and started on with the lakes and rivers course fishing. im getting bored of sitting round waiting for the bites and the float to bob and like the idea of being a bit more active with me fishing, similar to the memories i have of spinning for pollock. i mentioned to me dad that i wanted to get into fly fishing and he told me he had two rods, one his personal and expensive one which i clearly wasn't getting my hands on and my grandads old split cane A E rudge fly rod. now cause my grandads past away and im already using his other rods i dont feel the need to use this and want to keep it for very special days here and there so ive opted to buy a new set up.

ill mainly be fishinging larger rivers, the river wear in durham, lakes and reservoirs. ive read a fair few of these "im new to this fly fishing" threads and wanted a bit more of an opinion on the rod ive got me eye on, the dawia true flight rod. i chose dawia cause from what i remember my grandad banged on about dawia like mad and i have his old dawia bag and i thought it be canny if they matched haha. is it still the same good quality as it used to be? going for the cheap and simple shakespear alpha large arbor reel. line wise i haven't a clue, all these gargets im guessing are tracers, i haven't really got a clue but i was going to ask in the local shop as their local knowledge may be of more use.

if anyone has any info on the rod or dawia then im all ears, cheers

A friend of mine, Steve, works in a tackle shop. He was asked by the owner of the shop to phone Diawa about something or other. When he got through a lady with a thick Glasgow accent answered. Staves comment was...

"'Ello luv, could you put me through to someone who speaks English please."

Their response to this taught me the one thing I know about Diawa.

They don't have a sense of humour.

I know even less about the rod that you mentioned.

Choosing a rod is difficult, if not impossible, for a beginner. You need to be able to cast to choose a rod. Without a rod you can't learn to cast. The best thing to do is have a beginner's lesson. This needs to be proper instruction. Un-learning the bad habits you pick up from being taught by a well meaning friend, is harder than learning to cast.

The shop that Steve works for run's beginners days. All equipment is provided and there are a couple of instructors on hand to get you going. This is the best way to start. That shop is a not in your area, but there may be something more local. If you are willing to travel for a beginners day PM me and I'll let you have the shop details.

Cheers,

OT.

I got a little money saved up and found a new tackle shop so i have bother nice old bloke help me out with choosing a rod. I ended up with a diawa lockmor rod for 40 pounds. After getting me reel, some greys line, backing line and the other last bit of line all put on it came to just over 65 pounds. Think ive done ok. Find out if its any good in a few days haha. Cheers for your help though
