Interprovincial Championships 2000

Host - Cabra Coarse Angling Club for the Leinster Coarse Fishing Federation.

This year, for the first time in 15 years, the Interprovincial Championships were fished in Dublin (I remember being at the last one). This time the event was missing last years victors, Ulster and Connaught. Despite this poor turnout, the event still went ahead with a head to head between Munster and the home side Leinster. To say it was an unusual day weatherwise would be an understatement, with torrential rain and hail storms, frightening thunder and lightning and blistering sun.

The event was ran on the Ashtown stretch of the Royal Canal, on the West of Dublin city. With this drastic change in the weather, the fish that were showing for the last couple of weeks retreated and did not show in any form. The event fished extremely badly with the top weight of 0lb. 7.5ozs going to Leo Aungier of Leinster.

In the end the result was to be a mirror of the result back in 1985 with Leinster coming out eventual victors. The points were Leinster 24 pts and Munster 28 points. Despite the conditions and poor fishing, there was a good atmosphere on the bank.

Many thanks to all at Cabra Coarse Angling Club who worked so diligently with Duchas, the Central Fisheries Board and Dublin Angling Initiative to have the venue up to pristine condition for this competition. So, going into 2001 Leinster hold the shield, can they do the double?

All Ireland Team Championships 2000

Host - Leixlip Angling Development Society for the Leinster Coarse Fishing Federation.

This is the first year of this new All Ireland Teams competition and hopefully interest will grow in the competition in the next few years. Although the attendance at the event was small, all who participated were excited to involved in this new idea. The event was held on the Lucan stretch of the Royal Canal. The weather conditions were similar to Saturday with torrential rain and blistering sun.

The fishing was exceptional with the top weight going to Nick Harrison, Sensas Erne Anglers with a whooping 25lb. 6.5ozs. which consisted of 13 Bream, a perch and 2 Tench. Nest best was Jack Tisdalll, Sensas Erne Anglers with 8lb. 4.5ozs. which consisted of 1 tench, 15 roach and 5 hybrid. 3rd overall was Robert Payne, Royal Enfield Angling Club with 7lb. 9.5ozs, which included 2 tench.

In the team event the result was conclusive with Sensas Erne Anglers Amigos winning all five of the section. The team consisted of Bobby Smithers (6lb.15ozs. Section A), Jack Tisdall (8lb. 4.5ozs, Section B), Fintan Lawlor (7lb. 2ozs. Section C), Alan Larkin (4lb. 5ozs. Section D) and Nick Harrison (25lb. 6.5ozs. Section E). This was an exceptional performance by a very strong team.

The other team results were:

1st: Sensas Erne Anglers 5 points

2nd: Whizzo Portobello 15 points

3rd: Prosperous Gold 19 points

Many thanks to all those who took part, especially the Northern Team of Sensas Erne Anglers and the Munster team who made the long journeys to compete. Thanks to all the other competing teams, Duchas for having the canal in perfect condition for the match, Joe Caffrey for his assistance during the weekend and Leixlip Angling Society for hosting the event.

Watch this space for further details of the upcoming All Ireland Coarse Fishing Championships 23rd July 2000 and the World Teams of Five Qualifier on the 29th/30th July 2000.
