Hello again,

It may have already been posted, but here's a simple subjective question; What is your favourite species and why?

Steve.

Fairly even between rudd & perch I think.

Rudd - the most beautiful of fish but now sadly hard to find. I caught 3 2lb+ fish in one session in my first year of fishing and got hooked. Unfortunately nearly 20 years on I've never managed to scale those heights again. Perhaps a trip to Ireland is called for.

Perch - first 'proper' fish I ever caught and I just kind of like their attitude (if that makes sense)

Fairly predictably I suppose, I've got to say barbel, but why, that's more difficult. Possibly it's because that mostly barbel are found in the more attractive of venues, or that they can be fished for with so many different methods, but I think the bottom line for me is THE BITE!!! This season, for whatever reason, they've been hitting even harder than ever, it's been impossible to say where the bite ends and the first run starts. On a stretch of Kennet I've been fishing one of the members had his rod pulled in recently - nothing unusual in that you may say - thing was he was holding it at the time and touch-legering! Torn out of his hands it was! Maximum respect! (See, I may be an old fart but I'm still street-wise...)

Fresh water - as everyone here knows is the barbel, for their looks & sheer fighting power. "falling in love again" second in line is that little stripy fellow the perch, again a scrappy little devil & so pretty.

saltwater - has to be a marlin, don't mind which colour, like my double barbel I will catch one, one day!

Just to cast the net a little wider I'd also have to add Nile Perch mainly just for the sheer size and fight of the things, Vundu because nothing I've ever experienced pulls harder, tigerfish because nothing I've ever experienced moves faster and black piranha because they chew up 3x trebles for fun!

Tench - beautiful

Gudgeon - look so ridiculous they make me laugh

Pike - can look you in the face and say '**** off, human. You just dare *swimming* in this water matey!'

In freshwater, I would say Roach. In good quality water they look beautiful. They are widespread and yet so elusive as they get bigger. Bear in mind that a Roach of about a pound kind of equates with a Chub of 2lb or a Tench of about 3lb, it may be me but I find the decent Roach the most elusive.Perch cos they are so different and look the biz.

The Mullet is a salt/freshwater favourite. Easily seen but so hard to catch, infuriating. They go like rockets, pound for pound they must be one of the top fighters.

Cheers Adrian.

Perch, followed by tench. Why? Because they put up a fight far stronger than any other fish of comparable size, and the perch is just such an attractive fish (no jokes please Elton.... ;-) ).

I have to say though, when I go fishing I'm happy to catch anything. As far as I'm concerned it could be a 30lb+ carp called Bernard or some anonymous little roach no bigger than your thumb. I just go fishing, and IMO people who specialise in just one species are missing out on a lot of pleasure (and if that doesn't raise some comments I'll eat Lyn's underwear biggrin.gif ).

Cheers

Steve,

You don't mention what your own is, I guess probably barbel but also why ?

For me it's carp, because of the size and the sense of achievement at catching a big fish (whenever it happens). Next would probably be Catfish for the same reason.

I do like fishing for roach and rudd but I get bored very quickly if I catch them.

Rob.
