Genesis Smart Mono

Bit sad replying to your own posts but just thought I would let you know that I bought some and its going back tomorrow! Basically its crap!!

Its supposed to be 8lb but I can wrap it round my fingers and break it. Seems that sometimes its good but often not so I presume its full of weak spots. A quick test indicated that it was breaking at between 5lb and 6lb with a ‘figure of eight knot’ (used for typing loops) each end.

Braid is banned but can anyone recommend a good low dia mono (or fluro) for 8lb hook lengths please?

Cheers.

Roger.

Terry Eustace Pro Gold is very good, as are most of the Berkley lines (except Vanish). I particularly like Tournament Strength in the photochromic colour. Ultima is another I've used a lot with no problems, and I've heard people say that Shimano Technium is also pretty good.

If you want a good cheap line however then Diawa Sensor will fit the bill, or there's always Maxima, still good after all these years.

At the end of the day though you need to get fresh line. That's probably why you're having a problem with the line you have. Breaking 8lb line by hand should be extremely difficult, but line loses its strength as it gets older, particularly if exposed to sunlight (doesn't like ultraviolet I think). Getting fresh line is probably more important than the brand you choose.

Hi David, thanks for the reply and advice.

All my line is new. After experimenting a bit I went back to Maxima for my main line because I have total confidence but recently I have been looking for a low dia mono. My tackle shop suggested the Genesis stuff but they can have it back – even though there is a couple of foot it missing.

Cheers.

Sorry mate, saw your post too late. I have bought Daiwa though - Super Shinobi. Seems to be far better. Will update when it has had a real test. :)

Thanks for the advice though.

Roger.

Larry mate

My spelling's not brill at the best of times but I think you mean fluorocarbon

Personally I think these are over-rated (and over-priced) for most applications. For VERY heavily pressured and crystal-clear waters (where do you find those?!) they're OK for hook-lengths.

Ashima's Poltergeist and Sufix Invisiline are better value for money IMHO

But avoid those FLOURocarbons, white, brown or wholemeal coz they go very soggy in water. OK for bread-making though
