meal worms

bill - can't speak for sure about UK fish but in the US, meal worms are used much more frequently than maggots. Similar catches but generally larger fish.

 

I'd say that unless you are fishing for ones that can barely handle a single maggot, meal worms should do well.

 

Thread em on like you would a lobworm if the hook is small enough. Or hook em thru the middle. Or use a product like BaitStick® that is sticky enough to stay on the hook and hold the worm on as well. They will certainly stay livelier that way since they haven't been injured by the hook.

 

And grasshoppers and leaches and quite a few other "naturals" that, Like BaitStick®, don't seem to have found favor with UK anglers. But probably would with UK fish. :)

 

And if you decide to raise your own, it certainly is easy enough and smells lots better than raising maggots.
