Globe - I'm about to the middle of your latest book. Wonderful stuff.

I do have to wonder though. In the US, guys who make a living riding bulls in competition tend to retire fairly young. Something about a 170lb man trying to spend time riding an angry 2000 lb animal I suppose. They eventually get so many parts broken so many times that they have to quit riding.

I gotta wonder if some of your adventures might eventually so the same to you. :D:D

Hi Henry,

Not been to Finland yet. I am going on my first Europe trim this August to Norway, a little north east of Tromso and quite close to the Finland border. I shall be sea fishing though. Hope to find some nice cod and coalfish and possibly a halibut!

Newt, If I can survive being shot in the head while fishing, I suppose I can survive anything...although I think I'l leave the cockroaches to the nuclear fall-out... :D

I'm glad you're enjoying the book.

My next major trip will be to USA for 3-weeks, then to France for a week, then back to USA for a week. Bees don't know what busy means!

Henry - I lived in Scandanavia on-and-off for a 15-year period, although I never stretched to Finoscandia. Finland has some superb fishing, and there are thousands of untapped waters.

Tony - if any of it brings you to the East Coast and you want to try for a buffalo or two, give a shout. Lake Wylie (on the north/south carolina border and just south of Charlotte, NC) produced the current NC record of 88lbs and there are probably larger to be caught from there.

Love to take you up on that offer one day, Newt.

My last few trips to USA were after carp and big Buffalo in Arkansas and Texas waters.

I'll be fishing mainly in NY State, and Great Lakes areas this next USA trip through June; and also Vermont and coastal near MA etc.

I'll also be a guest at the Jr USA Carp Championships on St Lawrence in August.

Hi All! and John Bogle!

So, You have not been to our archipelago!

Here You can find some information about the south-west part of our archipelago. Finland have some 90.000 islands all together, here You see some:

http://www.saaristo.org/eng/index.htm

As You can see, the information is in English.

Click:

"Image Gallery" => Gallery 1, Gallery 2 and so on.

"Map" => Klick on the different names. I live in 'Parainen'. (At the n:o 1 in the map).

We have most pike, perch and salmon in the spring.

I am in a hurry just now, but I will tell more about fishing in Finland later.

Please send me questions, if there is something that interests You.

Henry

Yes, and You should all come and fish here. Tomorrow.

Henry again.

You should have every chance of catching some huge cod upto 40 - 50Ib if you are going where I think you are.

Personally, I'm born and raised in the stunning Lofoten/Vesteralen group of islands, another North Norwegian area with some amazing sea and inland fishing.

I do not know how much is a lb, but I think it is about 0,45 kg?

Anyhow, our pike is up to 12 - 14 kg. Mostly I like to fish from the islands, not from a boat. Fishing from land, I get pike between 1,5 - 5 kg. They are big enough for smoking, as we usually eat them.

Yeah, yeah, I know, You are for the big fishes! But I am mostly together with my vife, and I am just happy when she is happy.

She likes the nature, the islands and even to catch a fish, now and then.

Neither of us likes to sit in a boat filled with fish up to our armpits, the boat hardly floating.

That is simply not us.

Usually I take some meat with me on my fishing-trips. Then I look for a flat stone, put a fire under it. When the stone is hot, i fry the meat on it. With me I have some onions, tomatoes etc.

Then I fix some coffee in a kettle on open fire...

And between this eating, I'm fishing.

In the evening, about 21.00 - 22.00 we go home.

Sometimes earlier, depending on the weather.

Usually, if 'the guys' has phoned me that they are coming that night after work, 'fishing', we go home earlier, maybe 18.00, with fish for everyone.

Then we begin to smoke the fish, and drink (something else than coffee).

Usually we smoke fish until the morning, or until someone comes from the next willage and tell us that it is not allowed to put up a jazz-orchestra at the beach 3.00 in the morning.

You maybe wonder what my wife says?

Nothing, I have always written a love-poem beforehand for her.

It is not so unusual that a guy loves a wife, but that it is my own wife, astonish even me!

And I've seen a lot!

So, a flight from London to Tampere, Finland (some 2 hours from the coast), costs 25 EUROs and from Glasgow 45 EUROs. Only!

Do not buy tickets back, You maybe do not want to return. Just fish, and the other thing.

A personal fishing card that gives You the right to fish the whole year, costs, I think, about 30 EUROs.

And because we are in EU, You do not even need a passport. Just come.

Now You think that I am working for the Finnish Tourist Board? No?

No, I am just crazy, but that You figured out already when You read half-way this post.

Vidar,

Me and my father shall be fishing from a place called Olderdalen. I have heard about Lofoten and it is famous as one of the cod breeding grounds around Easter time I think? I have seen the pictures of 80lb+ fish!

To be honest the stories I read about the fishing in Norway sound too good to be true, so I am going with not too high expectations and will wait and see exactly how good the fishing is. I would be very happy with a cod of 15lbs and 20lbs would be a dream come true for me.

I also hope to see plenty of wildlife as this is half of the enjoyment on my fishing adventures. I very much hope I can see some big white tailed eagles up close.

If you know much about the fishing in Norway I would be very keen to hear any tips you have as to what techniques work best.

We have use of a good boatfor the week but also hope to try from the shore a lot too.

John
