Are you staying on a camp-site or in a gîte or where? A lot of places have their own private lakes etc.

The river itself is very commercialised with canoes, swimmers etc etc!!

They're also heavily into fly-fishing of course.

OK, that's fine. For "local" and "inside" info, and presuming your friends speak French, your best bet is to ask them to ask at the tourist office (see below) or to ask their local "Mayor", who will know everything

St Astier: An unspoilt French country town, quite devoid of tourist shops, but with useful supermarkets as well as, of course, boulangerie-pâtisserie etc. A market every Thursday fills the maze of streets around the 11th century fortified church. Nearby there are plenty of inexpensive restaurants, such as Le Vieux Chaudron in St Aquilan, the next village. Perhaps our favourite is the Leon D'Or in the tiny village of Manzac beyond St Astier on the other side of the L'Isle.

There are two lakes with leisure facilities within easy reach. St Astier has sports facilities, bike hire, river canoeing and bathing, also a very good swimming pool which is open air in the summer. Information on local sports, sights, museums and other fun things to see and do can be had from the syndicat d’initiative, (tourist office) in St Astier, situated in the centre of the town in the covered market.

Obviously you'll need the info in advance, so you know what tackle to take ..and you'll need a French licence and to stick to the ByeLaws or they'll confiscate your equipment (very painful!)
