As a sometimes visitor to Morpeth/Ashington I have walked the banks of The Wansbeck, never seen anyone fish it, but have seen plenty of fish activity. Is the coarse fishing worthwhile? And, of course is access available?

Any info, greatly appreciated...Keith, Blyth? Maybe you can help with this one...

Cheers,

Paul H

Maybe I can at that! smile.gif

Except there's nowt to tell I'm afraid.

Officialy there is no coarse fishing (and to listen to some people, no coarse fish) in the Wansbeck.

FULL of little trout through (that's most likely what you'll be seeing at Morpeth).

Unofficially, it is a less than well kept secret that there are indeed pockets of coarse fish in the river (roach and perch mainly plus some nice pike), but no way of getting onto the river specifically to coarse fish - although others might know better.

The Morpeth town stretch is as far as I'm aware free fishing, so you could have a bash there (it isn't fly only as far as I know), and I have heard that the day ticket available from the "Wansbeck Riverside Park" outside of Ashington covers "mixed fishing".

That'll mean eels, I imagine...

That's about it, I'm afraid.

Thanks, Keith should up in the region mid-October for the Toon/Spurs game so will take along a float rod and a few bits and see if I'm chased off.

Actually last time we was up we stayed in a B&B in Morpeth that backed onto the river and looked across the park.

Cheers,

Paul
