Lake Windermere help

anc

Recommended Posts

hi everyone im new here, found the site while doing a search fopr info on windermere, found matt hayes and then here, so heres the first question, do any of you fish Windermere on your own boat, i have a 17 foot grp cabin cruiser that is ideal for a weekend out on the lake , i wondered if you have info on legal requirements for the boat to get on the water, minimum ins req. mooring advice, ie can you just drop anchor to suit your self? i know you need a license from the lake rangers for the boat that is in hand already. Launch sites would be useful too and costs involved, finally i read on one site a front mounted fishfinder was needed, mine is rear mounted, is this because of the depths/ shallows. i cant think why otherwise.

Any other tips would be appreciated, ah good im glad i got that off my chest, now ill leave it to you lot to sort out all the problems i have in the world.

Hi and welcome anc.

Glad you found us. Lots of people to help you here.

Good sites,

All boats fitted with engines must be registered and display their registration numbers port and starboard at all times.

Heard nothing about position of fishfinder, although Chris Sodo may help more, he is the local expert and has a fishing book of the lakes published (£5.99).

There are several launching sites. Moorings are available, probably expensive. Chris can help on this also.

You can anchor where you want as long as it is not on the skiing plots or where the depth is more than 150 feet. Most pike anglers just drift baits along the offshore drop-offs.

In 2005 a 10mph limit comes into force.

Tight lines,

Brian

thabks brian ill take a look, originally the boat was to be moored at Barmouth for the Bass fishing but ive had a change of heart as it is to be its first season , my fishing is varied so missing Bass but having pike perch and eels to go far is far from hardship, the 10 mph doesnt bother me much, i had heard, the question regarding moorings was based around leaving the boat on there for the year, not at a marina , i know they charge the earth, but at some bay or cove accessible by dinghy at the weekends, this is where im not sure about the rules, can you in effect just leave a boat where you want , within reason, by just dropping a decent anchor and paying that license?

Hi anc,

Sorry about the porn link! :o I should have checked them first. I didn't remember to omit the "www" . It is o.k. now.

Regarding moorings, there are some on the River Levan where it exits Windermere at Newby Bridge, near the hotel. I live about 20 minutes away at Askam in Furness. Lots of bass fishing here also.

Permenant mooring on Windermere will cost you an arm and a leg. You can launch at the ferry for £10, with another £5 to park your car in an otherwise empty car park (during the Winter).

You might find a cabin cruiser a little difficult to fish from.

Good luck

Eric

PS, that you Brian?

Hi Eric,

Yes, it's the one & only, back from the land of frogs to the land of toads (Natterjack variety), here at Askam.

Further to boating fishing on the Lakes, boats can be launched at several sites on Windermere, but often either non-powered ones or with a maximum engine size of 5hp and only open boats.
