If you mean a 'baitrunner' or 'bite-runner', it's quite a useful thing to have. You cast, close the bale-arm, then flick the catch for the bite-runner. If a run develops, the reel will allow the spool to turn, giving a clicking/whirring sound, and preventing the fish from pulling the rod into the water. As soon as you wind forwards, the bite-runner clicks off, and the reel behaves normally again. I have two bite-runner reels, and I use the feature whenever I fish without a float. It's also used when I'm setting up the rods, because it allows me to thread the line through the rings without too much spilling off the reel.

You meet all kinds of animal on the riverbank.
