pole float weights

ok, new to pole fishing or will be after xmas, and was wondering about what the ratings of some pole floats mean. I understand when they are expressed in grams, but it's the 4x12, 4x14 etc. which has me confused, as looking at rig setups in the the weeklys etc. it doesn't appear to be as straight forward as the shotting capacity of the float as say a waggler or stick float, ie. not 4 number 12's.

in my opinion these 4x12 style marking are as much use as a concrete banana.

 

im at work at the mo, however, when i get home ill post the grammage for these floats.
