I'm a Shimano fan and for this sort of fishing use their Super GT. I very much like the control that their fighting drag gives, and Shimano reels are very reliable. One comment I would make is don't go for an ultra fast retrieve if fishing on commercial carp fisheries - a lower retrieve is actually better for this sort of fishing.

If this reel is too expensive look at the Shimano Sedona series. Half the price of the top of the range models but with all the features. The colour's different and Shimano won't say if it's built to lower tolerances.

I won't do a formal review of Shimano products as they seem reluctant to support Angler's Net. However, I'm happy to recommend their reels when asked for specific advice.

There has never been such a wide choice of affordable, useable gear. Every manufacturer makes several decent reels right accross the price bands, and the price of quality is dropping all the time. Go into your local tackle shop and turn a few handles, the good ones just feel right.
