Pretty birds, are they common up by you? Never seen one before

 

Last time I saw one was yonks ago, at Castle Howard great lake near York. They're quite widespread in the UK, without being particularly common (so I believe.) They are also the primary reason I put up with the extra weight of a small pair of field glasses when fishing - beautiful, without any doubt.

Definitely, I'd love to see one

As famous fisherman John Gierach once said "I used to like fishing because I thought it had some larger significance. Now I like fishing because it's the one thing I can think of that probably doesn't."
