Job prospects..

The people I know who've made a career out of it have all had degrees in biology, zoology or some such natural science subject. I think without a degree you'll hit a bit of a ceiling within organisations like the EA, water companies etc. There really is a big step between the bailiffing type work and the science work. As for companies, then I can think of the following :

 

Environment Agency

British Waterways

Water Companies

MAFF (or whatever it's called these days)

Environmental Health

Conservation companies/charities (English Nature etc)

Museums/education sector

 

Sadly I don't think you'll ever get rich working for any of them I'm afraid.
