Hi can anybody tell me how to use a hair rig as I want to give them a go for mullet?

How do you set it up?

Have they been used for mullet by any of you?

Hair rigs work for carp because the carp sucks the boilie from off the bottom, and everything else goes into it's gob with it.

My experience of mullet, is that when they are in a picky mood, they carefully nibble bread flake from around the hook, leaving the hook bare, apart from the hard bit pinched to the top of the shank.

I've seen them doing it, those lips full of sensors seem to detect the hook, yet the same fish feeds happily from a cage swim feeder, confidently sucking bread from within, through the wire!!

I make a habit of painting my hooks white, it does seem to make a difference. However, place a baited hook inside a glass of water, and look at it from below, and you can see the shadow of the hook, within the opaque bread flake.

IMO, if they are in a picky mood, they will still outsmart a hair rigged bait, if they are feeding confidently, they will engulf the bait, hair-rigged or not.

I'll be interested in how you get on!

Hi guys, I've never heard of using a hair rig for mullet before - could work well in areas that you fish the feeder.

Other than than, I only use a hair rig for BIG cod when bites are slow on lug 'n squid.

Seeing as how this thread is mullet related, have either of you guys used the new Sensas mullet groundbait yet?

I's damn good stuff packed around a feeder.

'The Method' has taken some good mullet in Dorset recently - there's a 5 page feature coming out in the December issue of TSF (Not intended as a plug - just thought you might be interested in a specialist feature on your favourite fish!)

Hi Dave,

No, but I've been using krill based Marine Crustacean Extract (obtainable from the National Mullet Club) - That certainly does seem to make a difference.

Hi MMC,

My mullet fishing is over for this year, back to piking and chubbing for a few months.

There's still mullet around in the Medway, but somehow it doesn't seem right to fish for them standing in the wind and rain!

Hi Dave, I was realy interested in your comments on a hair rig for cod. Could you provide more details please as the cod are getting harder to catch at this time of the year in the North sea.
