Hard Drive Question

Two quick points

As someone who uses a lot of OEM equipment...

Whilst hard drive manufacturers may say they will not exchange the drive they will, and do, since they are legally obliged to (if it's faulty within a reasonble time frame, you cannot devoid yourself of responsibility through paperwork). You can claim anything - the company has gone out of business, we have a poor business relationship etc BUT most hard drive companies will still accept the return.

Secondly I wouldn't ever expect a computer hard drive to come in a box or with an IDE lead. I used to retail computers up to two years ago and basically everyone in the industry is flogging OEM gear (i.e. intended for computer guys to use to repair computers) direct to the public as retail. Yes, retail drives are available, BUT I do not think you'd see very many at eBuyer, Dabs and other such places (in fact, PcWorld is probably one of the few where you still might).

Whilst it is true that many will replace faulty drives, still think your first step should be to contact the shop for replacement as this will be your easiest, quickest and cheapest option for you, as you'll have no drive to return to the manufacturers and no wait for it to be returned.

Use this to check the drives warranty with Maxtor: https://www4.maxtor.com/en/support/service/rma/create/

and arrange a return if you've had no luck with the shop.

I build and repair systems for a living and have always been more than happy to immediately replace any faulty hardware my customers may have encountered, as far as I'm concerned in this line of work your customer service is crucial as much of my work comes from referrals. :)
