Vidar, hear what you say about the Scorpions, in fact the photo of the centrifugal brakes is of my Scorpion 1500 and whilst the dial up braking system on the high end japanese domestic reels is a piece of cake to use, they are also very expensive and not the sort of thing that beginners would probably buy, or come to that, even know about

 

Your comment about the cast control cap is text book true, but faced with a short period of wind in the face its easier and quicker to tweak the cap than open the reel and in some cases remove the spool and then set the brakes.

 

Lastly there is an error in the text. Half asleep when I referred to the ABU 5500/6500 as having two knurled nuts to remove the faceplate, unlike Shimano it is of course three.

 

I agree with you 100%, but reels with an externally adjustable magnetic braking system is even easier to use for a beginner, hence my comment
