Handheld VHR radios

I did an RYA course yesterday to get the Operator's Licence. Cost 45 quid for the course plus 20 for the licence. Good value, as someone here was recently quoting about 100 quid for a course. I went to Dewsbury College Adult Education Centre.

Anyway, the point of the posting is say, for those that don't already know, the licencing regime for VHF radios (as opposed to Operators) is changing.

At the moment radio licences are issued by the Post Office and are 15 pounds per year for handheld VHF radios.

However, from Oct 1st 2006, the franchise for issuing these licences passes to Ofcom. If you apply for a radio licence from Ofcom, via their webiste, after that date, it will be FREE and will be for life (not annual).

Nice, but unusual, for something from the govt to get cheaper !

Thats good news, but maybe its just to hard from them to make people pay for hand held, its been free in most of the EU for years. terry

If only I had all the money for all the toys I want,;-(

Got most of them now, Just working on that Harley in blue ;-)
