Match and float Rods

I just wondered because there are so many types of rod. Whats the difference between a float rod and a match rod?

 

The guy in my local tackle shop said you could bring in a 30lb carp on a match rod.

A float rod is a rod for float fishing. A match rod is a light general purpose float rod, typically 13 feet long. There are more specialised float rods for particular applications - longer, shorter, heavier, lighter. You can land big carp on a match rod, but you would be a fool to pick that tool over something more suitable.
