OI OI,

Bwfore i pull my fly reel to bit's can anyone tell me if i snapped the ratchet off would it then become a small center pin, or will i just trash a perfectly good fly reel anyone tried it ??? thank's BILL

A centre pin has a set of pins near the rim to give a large diameter where the line is (so you don't wind in three inches per turn of the reel.) Conventional fly reels (ie not large arbour) dont have this because a fly line is so bulky. You can't really use a fly reel for anything else, except maybe kite flying. Centre pin reels are works of engineering craftsmanship, the average fly reel is, by comparison, a piece of junk designed to hold the line when you go for a walk!

Thank's for that colin, so im not about to wreck a brand new fly reel i'll just have to save like everyone else LOL

You woudn't have to snap the ratchet off a fly-reel anyway I don't think. In most fly-reels, you can flip one or two little triangular catches 120 deg. to make it freerunning. If you pop the arbour out you'll see the drag mechansim and the two catches on either side. It's pretty straightforward.
