Silicon

Im currently in the process of kitting out my kayak, its certainly no easy job finding all the bits and bob. I swear someone needs to open a kayak fishing shop very soon!!!

My current question (i know theres been lots) is there seems to be a vast range of silicon sealants/adhesives would someone mind recomending me a brand/range that i can just go straight in and buy. I mean are there any types that tend to be better in the marine environment? Every aspect of kitting out a kayak seems to involve hours and hours of research.

Thanks

If you need to use an adhesive, Devcon 2 ton epoxy is quite good (as used on the Caper transducer installation at www.anglersafloat.co.uk). Its cure time is quite long and it doesn't generate as much heat. After my cup which holds the transducer in the hull came loose ( was siliconed in) I went for the more permanent installation using epoxy and its holding tight at the moment.

Flush rod holders and rod mounts should be secured with rivet, well nuts or stainless steel nuts and bolts if you have hull access behind the fitting. Use a bit of sealant around any holes which need to be drilled for the installation.

For general sealing use Loctite 595, it's a silicone sealant adhesive bonds enough to produce a good seal, I use this on all fixings. Devcon 2 Ton is the only Epoxy that I have any faith in, the Devcon 5 minute is a waste of time.

A lot of people have started using silkaflex, I don't have any experience of it but those that have used it are happy.

Be very careful what you choose to fit a Transducer, personally I would only use the Devcon 2 Ton for a permanent fixing. Vaseline or Water methods are equally as good.

The latest project kayak on AnglersAfloat, will be mounted using a water system.

Your doing a great job ive been following it to do most of my modifications. I have a malibu 2XL, are there anymore walk through guides youve got coming? My next job is a fish finder would be good to see how someone else fitted on this kayak.

Have used sikaflex since the age of 15 .Got started on gloy glue - damn those primary school teachers, then got onto the hard stuff - at my worst I was on 4 tubes a day!

Seriously though, I used to sell and work on boats - sikaflex is excellent, if expensive stuff. 221 works most anywhere but they do specialist marine stuff as well

the 292 claims to replace mechanical fixings but I still can't bring myself to totally trust it so follow speciman's advice and rivet or bolt everything.

but watch out - it is REALLY sticky stuff and seems to get everywhere so mask around what you're sealing.

Looks like good stuff, shame its only available in white, i imagine it would look quiet messy around rod mounts!
