A much declined species found in inshore waters, which enters the rivers in spring, traveling far upstream to spawn. The species has been recorded in Falmouth Bay, The Tamar and in the Percuil River in the last ten years. Also in River Cree and Forth in Scotland. In general they are fairly widely distributed and common locally. Sorry I could not find more definate locations...

I've fished Whitby, Scarborough & Redcar using match tackle, fishing for billet(young Coalfish)& I've never seen a Smelt caught.

This is not to say they are not there but if they are they must be in very small numbers inshore.

These places are quite close to you Phil so perhaps give some indication as to their distribution.
