Kennet & Avon Canal - Woolhampton 1415 - 1715 Bright and VERY,VERY blowy - never see such waves on the canal before! AT 10ºC 4 Perch: a couple of 'pounders' and a couple half that. I ummed and ahhed about what to do today given the conditions and heavy rain around mid-day. Ended up having another fairly fruitless session trying to winkle out a big stripey from my nearest water - though yet again conditions were very sub-optimal. Only had a couple of 2lbers from here in ha

Kennet & Avon Canal - Woolhampton 1345 - 1615 Bright with squally showers. AT 10ºC 9 Perch; 5 over 1lb - 3 not by much and two that went 1lb 12oz & 2lb 8oz. 1 Roach (small - the lob worm it took was longer than it!) With a very mild end to the week I reasoned that the perch would be on the munch - and I was right. Didn't even need to wait until dusk for some action - in fact most fish caught with the swim bathed in sunshine - though (of course) the biggest one WAS as

River Kennet - Thatcham 0915 - 1245 Bright with squally showers. AT 9ºC. River up a few inches with a tinge of colour. 1 Chub; 1lb 13oz. 1 Grayling; 1lb 5oz. 5 Roach, 2 Dace & 4 Brownies - an old warrior of 4lb 12oz & 3 parr fish. My first visit here this season - mainly due to the fact that the venue has been closed whilst a new foot bridge across the Kennet was built. I usually consider this more of a summer venue so quite pleased with this morning's return especial

River Lambourn - Shaw   1130 - 1400   Cold, and sunny. -2ºC -> 1ºC. River at normal levels - crystal clear as ever!   13 Grayling: best 2, 1lb 7oz & 1lb 1oz. 1 brown trout parr.   Lovely afternoon in the cold! Fish were quite spooky - never caught more than 2 from any one spot. Experiment with pomergranate seeds a failure - skins are too thin for a good hook hold!

River Kennet - Newbury   0545 - 1015   Cool, bright and sunny. 8ºC -> 13ºC. River up a tad and carrying a bit of colour after yesterdays rains.   50+ Dace - mainly small save for one really goodun of 11oz and 2 or 3 of around 6oz. 20+ Roach, 2 Chublets - both just shy of a pound, 4 Gudgeon and a Brownie.   Pleasant mornings trotting. Hoped a barbel or two would put in an appearance plus a few bigger chub - but as these were the first chub I've heard of from here this season I was glad

Bucklebury Ponds   0630 - 0900   Clear skies, 16ºC -> 20ºC   3 Bream; 2 circa 1½lb and a tiddler, a doz+ perch.   Bit of a half-hearted session as I wasn't expecting much action but after a hot, sticky and rather sleepless night it was lovely to be out in the cool(ish) morning air - a few fish were a bonus!

River Kennet - Nr Thatcham   1800 - 2330   Warm and breezy evening - still 15ºC when I packed up. River quite low.   1 Barbel; 9lb 1oz. 1 Chub c1½lb, 7 Dace, 1 Roach, 3 Brownies to 2lb 4oz.   A barbel for the 2nd river trip in a row - and a decent one too! Was hoping today's rain would have gingered the river up a bit and so it proved! As usual, I started off with the trotting rod until it was too dark to see my float, but within ¾hr of settling down over

NAA Stillwater - Thatcham   1800 - 0300   Warm, still overcast evening - giving way to a chilly clear night after 2300 - temp down to 6ºC when I packed up.   5 Carp; 14lb 3oz, 9lb 14oz, 9lb 5oz, 8lb 8oz, 8lb 3oz. 2 Perch.   Failed attempt at an autumn crucian - though I did have a couple roll in the swim in the first hour or so as it got dark. All carp came to float tactics meant for the crus so took an age to land on 16s to 4lb bottoms (also lost 2 to hoo

River Kennet - Brimpton   1730 - 2230   Cool, clear evening, lovely for spotting the conjunction of the moon and Mars but not great for sitting on the riverbank with insufficient clothing! River at normal autumn levels.   4 Roach & 2 Dace.   Another fruitless attempt at a Kennet barbel without the hoped for trotted chub as hors d'oeuvres!
