Pumphouse Lake - CEMEX Yateley   1930 - 0530   Clear and chilly night - temp down to 7ºC at dawn - the thermal one-piece made a rare appearance!!   2 Tench, 3¼lb & 4¼lb   Slow night, no bites until well after midnight - then a mini flurry when I had the 2 tincas - both on ledgered pellet.

Summer Pit - CEMEX Yateley   1800 - 2300   Clear and still. AT 20ºC -> 12ºC   2 Tench: 6lb 0oz, 2lb 13oz, 2 perch (small)   Pleasant evening - though not even any sign of Crucians. Both tincas on float fished meat caught a rod length out as it got dark between 2000 - 2100. No bites before or after these times.

River Kennet, Newbury   0600 - 1030   Bright and sunny. 10 -> 15.5ºC. River lowest I've seen it all season and clear despite rain in the week.   6 Chub: 5lb 2oz, 2lb 5oz, 2lb 3oz, 1lb 10oz & 2 chublets (circa ¾lb), 1 Perch; 2lb 9oz, 9 Dace, 1 Grayling, 1 doz Roach, 2 doz Gudgeon.   A very satisfactory morning's trotting. Perch just about last fish caught - from low, clear water bathed in bright sunshine - who says they feed best in low light levels!!!

NAA Stillwater - Widmead   0600 - 1030   Bright and sunny - chilly (8ºC) start.   1 carp 5¼lb, 1 roach, 3 doz+ rudd & perch - mainly rudd.   Slow morning - only 1 bite on the lead - resulting in the carp - all others margin fishing maggots - though had to switch to meat after 15 mins - the place was heaving with small perch and rudd.....

River Kennet - Nr Thatcham   0715 - 1115   Bright and sunny. 12º-18ºC. River carrying quite a bit of colour (height of the boating season on the K&A )   5 Barbel - largest 5lb 9oz, smallest 3lb 6oz, 5 Chub - best 2lb, 2 roach, 2 dace.   A pleasant morning's trotting - 4 of the barbel came in the last hour from a swim vacated by another angler who had caught nowt on the lead (he was using corn/meat)!

River Kennet - Nr Thatcham   1830 - 0100   Warm overcast night - light drizzle from 2200 - temps never below 15ºC. River up a bit and carrying a bit more colour than of late.   1 Barbel 9lb 11oz   A very pleasant and 'educational' evening on the river in the company of Paul. The plan was for both of us to fish a couple of new swims which neither of us had ever fished before on one of our favourite club stretches. I struggled with both my choices - struggle

River Kennet - Nr Thatcham   1830 - 2330   Overcast with a few light showers. 17ºC. River low quite clear and little weed growth (much less than last year)   2 Barbel: 8lb 10oz, 4¼lb   First trip of the year to my Barn Owl swim - and was lucky enough to have this graceful bird grant me some fleeting glimpses!! Biggest fish just as it was dark - at around 2230.

NAA Stillwater - Widmead   1830 - 0000   Mild and drizzly - 17ºC   4 Roach & 2 Perch   Another dismal session - cut short as I decided a warm bed was the more preferred way to spend the the rest of the night! Even struggled for bites on float fished maggot!

6 July

River Kennet - Newbury   1845-2315   Breezy and dry at first with heavy (& prolonged) showers developing - 17ºC. River quite low but quite coloured.   3 Chub - best 3¼lb   An after work barbelling session - without the barbel!! All chub came in the 1st couple of hours - had quite a few chubby type bites which died off when the rain got more intense. Fish on 14mm Halibuts.

NAA Still Water - Thatcham   0430 - 0815   Overcast and mild. AT 63ºF at 0430. WT 73ºF   Blanked!   And blanked in some style too!! This is the 'easiest' water in the NAA portfolio - the one where they hold junior fish-ins. And yet for nearly 4 hours I couldn't buy a bite - despite fishing a single red maggot for most of that time - suicidal tactics usually if you wanted to avoid being plagued by small stuff. Paul did at least manage a couple of bites resulting in a carp & a crucian

Summer Pit - CEMEX, Yateley   1830 - 2330   Hot and Sultry. AT still 21ºC at 2330. WT 77ºF in margins (about 2' depth 4' from bank)   1 Tench - 2lb, 1 Rudd (Small)   Another evening struggling for bites - made all the more frustrating by being able to see lots of Crucians cruising in the upper layers of the lake during the hours of daylight. Stubborn refused to even look at any bait that was offered them!

River Kennet, Nr Thatcham.   0930 - 1430   Hot and sultry, 24ºC. River clear and low.   4 Barbel - 7lb 2oz, 5lb 3oz, 4lb 14oz, 4lb 4oz, 13 Chub - 8 over 1lb, best 4: 5lb 8oz, 5lb 3oz, 4lb 15oz, 4lb 10oz. 6 Brown Trout - 3 over 1lb best 2, 1lb 12oz (Same fish I think!)   A cracking trotting session in seemingly less than ideal conditions - but the usual tactics paid off. Keep trickling in the bait and they will come. First 'decent fish' (the 4.15 chub) came

CEMEX Summer Pit - Yateley   1830 - 2330   Warm, overcast and muggy. Min temp 17ºC at midnight as I left.   1 Tench - 2¼lb   Despite seemingly ideal conditions the lake was pretty lifeless with only sporadic bubbling and little of this after 2030 (around the time I caught my blank saving tinca). No crucians showing. Only had 1 other bite!

19/20 June

Newbury AA Lake - Widmead   1500 - 0800   Bright and breezy, calm and clear overnight, rain at dawn.   12 Carp - all between 5-8lb, best 8¼lb, 1 Tench, 3lb 1oz, 3small perch.   This was meant to be a tenching session - and all seemed to be going to plan with a tinca first cast. Alas it was my only one - the carp obviously muscling in on the action. Bread, pellet and meat - all caught.

River Kennet - Nr Newbury   0400 - 0800   Fine clear morning, 10º - 14ºC. River quite low and carrying its usual summer colour.   4 Chub best 2, 3lb 7oz & 3lb 3oz, 1 Perch 1lb 15oz, 5 Trout, best 1¼lb, 1 doz roach, 10 dace and 3 gudgeon.   A lovely dawn spent standing in mid river trotting maggot. Perch first cast, All chub came in consecutive casts after 0700 - from the tail of the swim where they'd no doubt been confidently sucking in my maggot for t
