River Kennet - Newbury

0415 - 0615

Mild, overcast morning - river at or slightly above normal summer levels - with a bit of colour.

1 chub 4lb 9oz, 11 dace, (3 really chunky ones - would have weighed them had I not been standing mid-river), 1 roach, 2 gudgeon and a spottie.

Very quick trotting session to christen the season before dashing off to watch Sam in his first AAAs final at Bedford this morning. Nice to see a decent chub turn up in this swim (you know which one, Chris ;) ) alas didn't have time to find out if his brothers and sisters were also in residence!

A nice start Chris and PB for Sam too, he must be very pleased.

Good to see that wading is possible now.

Wading is most definitely possible - still a bit of depth though! I hadn't actually planned to fish there - aim was to fish the slack above but there was already two anglers in it when I arrived (did they not see my ryepeck! :D ). Chub took an age to come on the feed - was the last fish I caught - pity I couldn't have stayed longer.....

Sam was actually a little disappointed - was hoping to medal and was looking good at 200 - cocked up his stride pattern in the middle third and did well to come through from last on the home straight - this set a new Newbury Athletics Club Senior Men's Record and puts him 5th ranked in the UK...
