Spinning for perch 8.7.13

The Flying Tench

A hot, sunny, clear day. Not exactly a day for perch you might say, except I once read something by Archie Braddock which claimed the opposite. He claimed that in summer the best approach was to go out in the middle of a hot day and trot worm at half depth. Phew! I tried it once a few years ago on the Kennet at Speen Moor. I only had an hour but, to my astonishment, I had a two pound perch! Admittedly I fished in shadow.

Today it was so hot and humid I just didn't feel like fishing till the evening. K&A canal. My plan was to lure fish from 8 to 9pm, and then float fish lobworm the last hour. A spot I've tried before with no success. I cast my trusty Mepps Fire Tiger No 3, and bang, first cast, a 2lb 5oz perch. I was really pleased as I haven't caught a decent perch for a while. At first I thought it was a 'three' - just shows I'd forgotten what they look like.

Nothing else on the spinner then, when 9pm came I realised I'd forgotten to bring a float. I just had the lure fishing bag. I tried drop-shotting a lobworm for a while, but never felt I really knew what I was doing. Not to worry, I was pleased with the nice perch!
