Perch - 2 firsts 14.5.12

The Flying Tench

6.30-9.30pm. Went to the pit again, and the first 2.5 hours were a blank. I was the only angler there, and you'd have thought there weren't any fish either. I tried spinning and float fished maggot and worm - not a bite. Then I tried jigged lobworm, and the response was immediate. Actually it was half a lob cos when I had a whole one on they just nipped off the tail.

I had five fish in the last half hour. All very small, but I was getting plucks and nibbles all the time. I'll have to find a way to get the bigger fish, and plastics is one obvious possibility. I've tried plastics a couple of times on the canal but not had a touch, but since a jigged bait is the way they seem to want it on this pit I've got some optimism.

So my first 'first' was perch on a new method, jigged lob. The second 'first' was that one of the fish could talk. Yep. It's never easy, of course, to interpret what a fish is saying, but this one was very clear. He said: 'Where are those lazy good-fer-nothing drop-shotters?' Well!

(Note. 16.5.12 I was hoping Mr perch's challenge would encourage certain local drop-shottters to have a go on this pit - BW. But I have just realised Rusty, at least, is off to Wingham. All the best there, Rusty! In the meantime I will try my self-taught brand of drop-shotting again to see if this pit is the drop-shotters' paradise I hope!)

Well done John, I've found drop shotting a lobworm to be a very good method for perch, I don't know whether it's better than a rubber lure or just an alternative but it does work. I'm taking the DS gear to Wingham but won't be able to use it in that way, jigging a lobworm is a sure fire way to catch pike on that water apparently. I can adapt the setup though.

It'll be a great weekend whatever the catch report. I'll need a PM for 'BW', I can't place it

I'd hazard a guess at BellWood... ;) Always used to be a lot of (rarely fished for) decent perch in there...
