  1. Well I like to think I am of some use even if its down to my lack of knowledge I never used to fish a pole but I was curious and tried now the things glued to my hands honestly I will take this information to my next fishing trip and if succesfull will create a post (with pics) and personally thank you all. I was a bit tentative asking the questions I did because its quite embarrasing how little I know of the finer points of my beloved sport. And i think all the tips mentioned here possible create the difference between a day when you go home and say "The fish just werent biting" and "Well it was slow but still produced some fish" I need to do some work myself rather than hoping the fish just jump into the net =) But look I can do it sometimes http://www.anglersnet.co.uk/forums/BAA-Wal...alcot&st=10
  2. I always plumb my swin when I fish but not in the detail thats obviously required, I seem to always fish straight out in front of my at my poles max length 12.5m minus last to sections (so i have back up incase of something big) and plumb the depth at that point. This advice is great as I wil now use the pole and plumb to feel my way across the bottom and find dips and holes to fish at. When you say "LINES" I take it you mean just a different swim, if so how much of an area do i feed I take it 3 locations at varying distances each bated up with 2ft diameter bed of bait will that do. I have always been a fan of fishing close in but in this weather do I need to find deeper water or is 4 to 5ft sufficient? Again guys thanks for all your reply's I just wish I was out on the bank now to try with my new found knowledge
  3. I have used very large pieces of bread in summers where Rudd and Roach are taking off the surface and they pick away at it attracting the bigger carp to hit whats left I remember eating my Mr Kiplings cake first thing in the morning so I could use the foil as a bobbin before my old man bought me my first monkey climber.
  4. As Venues go I recently fished a Lake about 1/4 mile out side Church Stretton I dont know the name but I was disapointed with myself as I blanked. Also I ish a place called Darnell Fisheries in Tenbury Wells. I enjoy catching Tench and Bream above all else but struggling to find a good local venue for that as the angling scene sems to be dominated by carp but any fish really. As far as bait goes, I never stray to far from Mixed coloured Maggots whether again this is an oversite as I try and tell myself fish through the small stuff and the big will come although with pleasure angling the limited use of keepnets makes this hard. I tend to not use Pellet as a hook bait as I am worried I will entice something my pole wont handle, dont get me wrong I would love to catch 10lb+ carp but I dont know if my pole would usually if they come to the swim I put a feeder rod on. The usual luncheon meat, corn aswell play a part. If I am fishing for a good days session I always set up one heavy ledger rod anyway with pellet and pva bags but its the pole i feel i need improvement on =(. CT, your answer was superb and possibly I had that in my mind that i needed to do it but just never did. I usually fish about 4lb line with 2lb bottom 16 hook and double maggot. I buy my rigs pre-made so dont delve too deep into shotting patterns. Hope this helps =) thanks again guys I really appreciate the replies.
  5. Well I have had much luck fishing in the margins but it has usually been after 4 or 5 hrs of fishing infront of me while throwing the odd handfull of bait at the sides and moving for just one or 2 drops in the margins, but I wouldnt think of starting my session off in them. I use a Leeda Assasin II pole which I bought as my first pole to try it is rated at 16 and I think I have 14 in it. I fish a lake in Whitley nr Stourport and the carp in there go up to about 15lb and I am not sure wheter my pole could handle a fish that big or do i just need a bit more confidence to attack the 8 to 10lb bracket of fish which are quite easy to get feeding?
  6. Great Forum guys!. I am 26 and have fished since I was 5. I used to call my self a Die Hard angler but once work and family started to take shape the inevitable happened and i started going less and less. I have still kept my eye in but it seems I have been left behind in our ever changing world of Fishing. I have a few questions that you guys may seem basic but I believe it is areas that I have been lacking and thus have been affecting my catches. To be honest I am not a match fisherman by any standards and only fish for pleasure. 1) I have only recently (last few years) started fishing commercial fisheries, they may not be classed as commercial but if I can hit the othe side of the bank with a half hearted cast its commercial to me =). I use a pole or a feeder and its the pole/float i struggle with. They are limited in features and thus I struggle getting my head round where to attack. I would fish margins but they seem too shallow and I dotn take the time to find out the complete layout and varying depths infront of me. Is This A Mistake? Is my lack of preparation in these situations affecting my catching and should I be dedicating the first 30-60mins plumbing everywhere in front of me to find ridges hollows and dips because forgive me I would in my old haunts look for a peg with a treeline near the bank or hanging over and fish that. 2) Ground Baiting: I used to fish Walcot Lake with the BAA and they had banned it there so again I have only started using it seriously in the past few years. I buy a bag with a well known name and add crumb to it to bulk it out again I dont actually take the time to riddle it. is this a Mistake. Should I buy a Bag of ground bait and not dilute it with crumb and should I riddle it. To round of this long winded post I am starting to believe that my lack of maticulous prep is starting to have a baring on my fish catches and that picking a spot infront of me, plumbing the depth, fishing just off the bottom and pileing in groundbait just doesnt cut it . I am sorry if I sound a bit of a beginner but I have dedicated alot of time to fishing but I have always believed what I did was sufficent. Thanks in advance for any answer John
  7. Saturday the 27th of October I am on a Boat fishing trip from Aberdovey. Has anyone any ideas on the fishing in this area and what I can expect to catch. Thanks John
  8. Thankyou I will do. I willl report how I do John
  9. Hi everyone, Im venturing to a local carp lake this Friday that has a good stock of carp to 20lb with some bream and other silvers. I am absoloutly desperate to catch a 15lb+ carp do you have any tips for fishing in this weather. John
  10. I have fished it quite a few times and had some good sport on the pole. The weed doesnt help though but provides good cover for the fish. The pallets at the front end of the lake are really good fun especially if you start dropping bait between the slats and waiting for he sucking noise . I remember once up there my Grandad (Charlie) was fishing away so I went to chat to him and heard this almighty sucking sound and tere was this big carp in the margins t had to be 15lb+ and all he was doin was feeding it but when I brought my rod round as soon as I hit the fish it took me straight into the weed and was lost forever . All in all I prefer the Washpool but tend to spend more time at the Hundred Pool. John
  11. I can perfectly believe that mate tbh I catch large carp all the time and they are huge untill I get them to scales and they stop at 8 - 10lb its unbelieveable I have no kind of comprehension what a 20Lb could look like im actually quite scared John
  12. It doesnt look over 20 tbh not from that picture unless its a foot wide. John
  13. In my honest opinion and from past experience I would say 12lb 6oz John
  14. Prize Bingo and New Years Parties (now there goes my rep). Living in Shrewsbury I havent fished the Teme for a long time and neither has Uncle to be fair. From what I understand The Washpool (top pool at Whiltey) was owned by a syndicate last year but now is day ticket again. However the lower ( hundred pool) is fishing well and although there is alot of small stuff I know there are some good fish. Here are some pics of my last trip to the hundred pool. All to much for Uncle But you can catch bags of those bream and small carp from right in at the margins, very good sport. John
  15. omg The very same, he does indeed live in Eardiston. Im shocked and stunned We have taken to fishing pools at Whitley Court now and Darnell Pools nr Newnham but looks like Im gonna have to step up the lottwery ticket purchases and prey for a win so I can buy my beloved lake LOL John
  16. OMG this is horrible, I cant believe that this place has gone so bad, I have never fished anywhere that holds such a good head of Tench seeing as most commercial fisheries pack Carp to the eyeballs. Anthony I know exactly where you mean, I used to fish with my Uncle who has MS so walking down to the B section was only done on a rare occassion but he loved fishing the peg directly opposite the first island and I sat on the peg with the over hanging willow just above it. Brings a tear to my eye thinking that thje place that kept me fishing through the teenage years where you make your vital hobbie decissions has now gone to the dogs. FOR GOD SAKE B.A.A. SORT IT OUT!!!!!!!!! John
  17. Hello all. Great forum you have here. I have fished at Walcot since I was 5 with my father and Uncle and I have enjoyed great Tench and Bream fishing but in the last 24 months i havent fished my beloved lake.I went there a few months for a reckie and was shocked at the cutting down that had been done. I was wandering what the Lake is fishing like recently, are there still good heads of Tinca and Slab and has anyone ever caught an elusive carp from this lake as in the 20years I have fished it I have never seen one. . John
