I live in Sydney, and one of my favorite fish is a type of flatfish called a "Flathead". There are about a half dozen species but the most popular ones for rec. anglers are the ,'dusky','sand',& 'tiger'.
The most common in the estuaries are the "Dusky" ,they are also the largest growing to over 20lb and over 1m long, although my pb was 1.12m & 16lb.
They are quite easy to catch on lures and this ,together with the advent of the soft plastic craze has had a detrimental effect on the populations of this remarkable ambush feeder. The same techniques that are good for flathead also work well for Sole,& Flounder.
The larger ones are all female and this has resulted in "slot sizes" being introduced together with small bag limits for these big female breeders(they all start life as males and change sex when larger). In some states it is illegal to take any fish over a certain size ,say 70cm/ 2'3".
I will try and post some pics later.
