Thats a great post Andy ....very informative and loads to try out ! I switched to float and maggot for a couple of hours yesterday, it was ok and had some bites but somehow just not as much fun ( and god I hate mesing around with those tiny shots) Might get to the resevoir today where theres very little snags !

None at all apart from this masochistic urge to lose expensive spinners to damm snags ! No really I just enjoy spinning....... However after this evening Ive decided to go float and maggot for a while the river is just to full of snags

brown trout River Etherowe can someone explain the close season when does it start /end ? Why does it exist ? Do people still fish ? etc etc !

Just an update ....... Had a brilliant day yesterday Went to a huge Lake near me and spent 4 hours pole fishing Caught 4 Roach and 1 decent size perch .... very pleased ! Came home and went out again to local river just for half hour whilst walking the dog and caught a nice brown trout using a swim feeder , this I was really pleased with as was just using a cheap Decathalon telescopic rod with the small reel they supply so it was hardly a good rod for swim feeing lol Any tips on rigs for swim feeding very welcome as well as tips on what rod to look out for Thanks guys !

Hi Thanks for the good advice There seems to be about 5 mm or so before the lip so that seems ok I cast using a finger to hold line but of course I am far from good at this ! So seems to me the prob is a combination of letting too much line go and not keeping things tight enough ? Also the local tackle shop tells me this is common with just loaded line and it takes a while to settle down ?? Like I say I know nothing !!

Tried my first time with rod and reel yesterday evening After a couple of goes the cast seemed to be working ok .. But then I started geting too much line loose by the reel and the result was a big tangle resulting in line having to be cut . Anyone have any ideas what I have done wrong and how to avoid this problem ? Many Thanks !

Hi New boy here ( well quite old really lol) Just decided to start fishing and have got myself a pole and a few rigs caught my first fish yesterday (small perch !) but it was jaws to me lol Looking forward to learning loads and very glad to find this forum
