been in this situation myself when i match fished,i sorted the situation by fishing a very short line to pole and struck at the bite towards the snag the fish always swim the opposite way into open water,i agree this type of fishing isnt for the purist and great for the fish but it happens. Anglers of all styles do things others find out of order. I'm afraid anglers can sometimes be their own worst enemy

dont forget the humble bread a decent bit of flake or crust popped just off the bottom will get you some cracking roach not to mention skimmers and bream.In the daytime dont fish too far out if you are on the rivers you will avoid the boat traffic interfering with your line and there are some big perch close in so take some big lobworms. Use good size baits on a 12 or 10 hook and you will get the better fish and have time to drink your beer inbetween bites !
