  1. I like to use a centre pin for margin fishing on still waters. I like the feel of the direct connection to the fish without any gears clutch etc, and also feel that when fishing close to snags/lillies/weed I have more control over how much and when line is given in the fight than you do using a fixed spool and a clutch.

A double figure carp hooked at close range on a 'pin is something every angler should experience :)

  2. I used to but not now. If I take much more than this it's because I can park the car right next to where I'm fishing...which isn't very often.

I'd get kicked out of my club if I went this minimal, "A large padded unhooking mat is required by all anglers" even if I'm trotting or whip fishing for silvers . . . . . My unhooking mat does more duty as a seat than it's intended job ;)

  3. 50m line of sight is normal for Bluetooth, but you can get modules with 1km LOS range. I get 33m line of sight to a Bluetooth weather station in my greenhouse.

However, this thing isn't Bluetooth based, it's got a built-in 802.11 WiFi hotspot. Range is 100m on Android and 60m on Apple devices.

Indeed, but being partially submerged in choppy water is hardly ideal conditions and unlikely to lead to anywhere near optimum range on any radiowave based system bluetooth wifi or otherwise . . . .

  4. There's always this...

Apart from the WTF price for a plastic float with a £5 webcam built in, I'm very dubious of the claimed 100m range - it uses bluetooth, and bluetooth is not designed for those sort of ranges.

I did buy and try an Ibobber - a bluetooth sonar device, and when trying it in a swim I know well it reported completely inaccurate depths and lost connection as soon as I cast it out more than an little underarm flick. it went back to amazon PDQ!!

  5. Thats a lot more complex than the rig I've been using! I was just tying the float on the end of the line and leaving a 3oz lead free running on the line . . . . worked ok up till about a month ago ;)

  6. Hi all,

How do you guys go about feature finding in weedy waters? I'm having great trouble with my basic marker float set-up in that the float is getting fouled in weed and not popping up when I let out line. it works fine in the margins but once I cast it out it doesn't work!

I've looked into castable sonar devices but none of them seem to have the range I need, and in any case I'd still want to pinpoint the feature with a marker float for baiting up anyhow!

    any suggestions ??

  7. I'll be at Marsh Farm with you :) Although I will be trying mainly for a crucian in the traditional way I may well chuck a "sleeper" feeder rod out and see if I can pick up a tench or two as well.

  8. I thought Matt Le Blanc was pretty OK. couldn't stand Evans doing a Clarkson impression though. and they completely missed the point with the new "Star in a car segment"

  9. Indeed, Rosberg is fine when he is out in front, but when he's got to fight for it he always seems to drop back. A real champ still moves forward after a bit of bad luck or problem , ,

Although yesterday Merc didn't win the race, Redbull lost it . . . About time some luck went in Hamilton's favour though!!

  10. I've had plenty of eels at wingham on bolt rigs - all lip hooked and a doddle to unhook.

I'm taking part in a species hunt, so was going to put a rod out for them on my next visit ;) I'm going to try floatfishing a lob in the evening, hopefully I won't have to resort to leaving a worm rig out all night .. . .

Maybe the mistake I've been making has been running rigs then, in the past I've used a simple running open ended feeder with chopped worm and just enough groundbait to hold the worms in on the cast

  11. I'm thinking of having a crack at some eels over the summer, but I always seem to deep hook them

Can anyone suggest rigs that might be more suitable than the simple running leads I've used in the past??

One thing I have noticed is that when I've caught eels while sea fishing they never seem to be as deeply hooked, Maybe larger long shanked hooks is part of the answer ??

  12. Nice one Mat, what time of day were the perch?

First was mid afternoon, maggot feeder, one at dusk on worm and one just after dawn again on a worm.

The eels were all just after dusk as I was a bit slow switching the baits over to sweetcorn for the night :)

  13. I did 2 days/nights last week on a kent gravel pit thats quite popular on this forum, had perch of 2:12 2:09 and 2:07 as well as 3 eels.

Heading to a local day ticket on Thursday, just not decided which one yet . . . . .

  14.

Final final tip get yourself a large external battery pack for charging you mobile on the bank. Mine charges my phone 4 or 5 times before it gives up!

This a newer version with a high capacity than mine!

I now use one of these, charges my phone quite well even in overcast conditions

  15. I’d be really grateful if somebody could spend some time with me on Saturday marking/spodding a swim. I don’t have the gear for that and have previously relied on fairly inaccurate casting and chucking out balls of groundbait.

You don't need expensive gear, any old avon or feeder rod will chuck a marker float, and you can use the same rod with a big swimfeeder rather than a spod to get the bait in - just takes a few more chucks :)
