  1. Great bait for chub - freelined on a large hook. A couple of years ago I took a friend of mine fishing twas his first trip for 30 years so I took him somewhere easy (or so I thought). Anyway after 6 hours without a fish - and getting pretty bored he puts a ruddy great slug on a size 4 and lobs it into the margins. Result - and instant take and a 5lb common. Followed in the next hour by 3 more the same way....

So whilst they are a traditional river bait - don't discount them in stillwater....

  3. Cracking quote Bill - ought to add it to the quotations thread of a while back. :D

As for fishing in wild weather I guess most of us have no choice. If you're restricted to weekends you've had all week to anticapte your trip and if you're like me will have your eyes glued to at least half a dozen weather forecasts and believe only the most favourable !!

And still you'll go telling yourself that the fish won't get caught sitting at home!!

  5. Elton:

The guy who owns the shop said "yes" without question when I asked him if he'd do this as a favour and is bearing the cost of processing the transactions, so a post on his forum saying "Thanks" would be nice        His main site is  here.

    .

Better still why not order some tackle at the same time - I certainly will try and order something...

Been there & placed a (small) order for some gear...

  7. P@UL:

Thanks, I think I'll just save untill I can afford a good one rather than buying a cheap one then regreting it.

Yup - reckon your right - 'the quality is remembered long after the price is forgotten'

  9. I think Paulg may have something to say on this thread - he's 'struggled' with a Leeds for a couple of years and in the last week is now the proud owner of the said Stanton a snip at £110. Yes 45 quid is very cheap - but it's money down the drain if it's no good.

Me? I use a Youngs Purist - a lovely reel

but it wasn't cheap (it WAS a lovely birthday present a year or so back :D )

  11. Yup - don't underestimate good ole fashioned raking. My PB last year fell to cockle/red maggot cocktail. This at the end of a very frustrating session when I knew they were in the swim bit not taking anything else I offered (meat, corn, paste, pellet, maggot). Out went the rake again and a change of bait to the said cockle cocktail brought half a dozen, 4 - (nearly)7lb fish in a couple of hours.

Twitching the bait every 5 or 10 minutes often resulted in a savage bite as well. This is another proven winner for me if I'm confident that tench are around but a bit undecided.
