  1. Chubby

Just got back from Rochester Sweeps festival so have only just picked up on your post. We were fishing at Newhouse Farm, near Totnes and had a great day the owner spent an hour teaching Sue to cast a fly all free of charge and the lake is in a simply superb setting. I would recommend it to anyone who is down in Devon.

    Tony

    Ok Tony

What is your local fishery down in Kent,if i may ask?

  2. Just bought myself an Orvis 10ft 4# and a matching Battenkill wide arbour, a lovely outfit had it out at a commercial put and take yeaterday and it was great fun for stockie bashing.

i sometimes air my #3 on the lakes :D

    Where were you fishing Tony?

  3. They were available at one time on ebay in large numbers.Think most were resonably cheap rods. Most likely source was China as that is where the vast majority of rods come from, even some of the more expensive makes, also reels.

  4. I know exactly what you mean, Chuby - thing is, I reckon I could have got by with only three types of fly in my box last season and not caught many fewer fish! I've tied up a load of little black jobbies, gnats and klinks, which should see me through my small stream fishing, some hoppers and lots of small black/red buzzers that seem to cover most of my stillwater fishing. I've also tied a load of diawl bachs, czech style shrimps, GHREs, PTNs and F-flies, so I could probably now put my tying kit away for the year - but I'm now deeply into tying things for the hell of it

    Very true

Same here.Buzzers, damsels and cats would probably do me,however i have far far far far too many others ,i will never get through em,even if i lived for another 20 years :o

If you want cheapo hooks to practice on,look on ebay at Royd hooks.I have used them, not great as some have faults, however plenty are ok and they have landed me fish alright.

If you use Kamasan's look here-

He is very good and those hooks are a good price as well.

  5. Addictive isn't it :D

I'm not knocking you,as you are doing what i did and probably every other new tyer does/has done ,thats knocking out as many different patterns as you can :D:o .

I'm not great at it by any means but found joining in fly swops on forums helped.Depending on the amount of tyers, say 10,you would tie 10 patterns all the same, send them off and receive the amount back in varying patterns from the other tyers. Its good in as much as it makes you concentrate on one pattern at a time.

Must admit it would be really great to be able to knock out some of the exquisite forms that some of teh guys produce, however a scruffy pattern will often outscore a nice neat fly.I was told by one tyer that when he used to buy flies,he would chuck em on the floor and rough em up a bit :D :D :o .

All that you have tied will catch at some stage

  6. :D :D Please can anyone help i'm going to Goa in 2weeks and would like any information on tackle set up places to go or even contacts i have tried numerous forums and websites and have had no response at all really. I don't know where to try next i just need to know what sort of tackle etc i will need to take

    Many Thanks Booty

Went there a few years back. Was quite keen on finding out about fishing myself without much luck.

Talking to the workers in the hotel, waiting staff etc, quite a few were keen fishermen, but with really basic gear-and i do mean basic.I gave them copies of some angling mags that i took over and they went bonkers :D

By all accounts there are catfish in some of the paddy ponds-BUT they will almost certainly be dry when you go(same time of year as when we went)By all accounts they srvive the dry spell!!!!.

Guess the sea would offer something, however there are some really strong currents. Was told NOT to go out on local boats.

    Sorry not much use

in fact pretty usless really :rolleyes:

    this might help

  7. Pegley Davies,now there's a name :D ,1970's if i recall correctly.They were a 'value for money' company,producing all sorts of gear.

Would the rod be cane or glass?,suspect glass in which case in all probability has a lowish value. However i could well be wrong and someone else may be able to enlighten you further.

  8. Quite likely!

The box is just a stopgap - it's ugly. What I've already spent on tools and materials would have bought me enough flies to last me a very long time, but the point of tying my own is just that it's nice to do rather than an efficient way of acquiring flies. Rather like using fly tackle at all, really ;) So I will find myself something a bit more satisfying to own and use to keep my stuff in. It's my birthday in a couple of weeks, perhaps my mrs will get me something!

A new wardrobe should just about be big enough

  9. Looks good to me,that will catch B)

Scruffy is good, that is what i was told when i first started tying.

If you ever tie up anything with bead chain eyes, look in B and Q,loads in there, brass, red, blue, large and small B)

Look for Sally Hansons 'hard as nails' for varnishing heads,or even just clear nail varnish B) .You have already discovered Hobby craft i see:lol:

This may be of some interest for patterns

  10. Hello people, I wonder if you can help me with this one....

I recently bought a Hardy "The Glaskone fly" 8ft trout rod at my local auction.

Unfortunately I don't know anything about the road and I can't seem to find out much about it on the internet either!

Can anyone help me with information about the rod such as age etc?? Value?

    Thankyou!

Think you will find its Gladstone

  11. Hi

I am new to fly fishing, although I was an avid coarse/specimen carper a few years ago. I would like some advice about buying a good range of flies that will see me through the autumn/winter on stillwaters. I haven't a what to buy.

    Cheers in advance

    Chris

Many flies will work at some time at most times of the year.

Damsels in their various guises, lures such as nomads, cats whiskers and various fritzy jobbies, nymphs such as hares ears, ptn's and buzzers will all work.Egg flies are worth a chuck at any time as well.

Your best bet is to see where you will be fishing, take a look at the web sites or make a visit and have a chat to the regulars as to what works and what doesn't.Some fisheries have size limits on flies,or restrictions on lures, some allow multiple set ups whilst others only allow one fly to be used.

  12. hi

anyone have any information on hazel copse in surrey how its fishing and wat flys are catching as im planing a trip down there soon thanks. :)

    Hi

Not been down there for some time now.Last time was in April.Just see Wilf the owner when you arrive,he will put you straight.

Generally buzzers will work well along with damsel. Most lures will also catch if thats what you want to fish.

Forecast is for much warmer weather again this week(7th Sept onwards),so obviously thats not conductive to good fishing.

The furthest pool has fished well for me on both my last two trips.Try over on the furthest bank in the corner-left hand side as you look at the pool.
