  1. There are now serious fines upon conviction for pollution. Also I know of three clubs that have just won serious damages for 'Loss of amenity' following on from a fish kill, the worm has turned. Call in the fishery Board immediately.

As for the Mulcair, I haven't fished it. The Blackwater is full of those nusciance fist though, every time I fished it for trout the Bluddy salmon kept giving themselves up. Best fly a size 12 or 14 pheasant tail nymph, but be warned you can't weigh them in at trout competitions.....I know, I tried once

    Greg

    a pain

    aint they :rolleyes: :rolleyes: :rolleyes::lol:

i would just like to hear yer veiws on these rivers and some other irish rivers

    thanks

    tight lines

    sean.. :P

Hi.Have fished the Mulcair before.Worming and spinning.Alas not had a salmon, but my mate had one on worm.Certaily if ever over there again i would give it a crack-it was cheap as chips to fish it :D :D

Suspect its still the same, the channel running up past Cloonlara from the power station was reputed to hold salmon amongst other species. Not supposed to fish it,but many were :headhurt::yeah:

  3. I am interested in trying out fly fishing and wondered if you could help.

Is it expensive? I have heard if you want to go to places to catch salmon, trout, etc you have to pay quite a bit more than if you were coarse fishing.

Where can I go thats close to Peterborough? I dont necessarily need or want to go to somewhere commercial.

What equipment do I need? Understandably a fly rod and reel but what about line, flies, etc?

    Many many thanks in advance.

Well true enough it can be pricey.Down here in Surrey and Sussex average for four fish i suppose would be around £35,although there are cheaper options and of course more expensive.Catch and release is cheaper, alas not too many this way.

Rods and reels need not cost mega bucks and neither does line, just look around-go to your tackle shop,if they stock fly gear and have a waggle with some rods. For small stillwaters a six weight rod and line set up should suffice or a seven weight outfit.Depends

really where you intend to fish.Take a look here

    http://www.flyfishingvenues.co.uk/list.asp...th+East+England

Just type in the area you want,it should throw up a few venues.

Have a browse through some of the back posts on here as you will probably find some of the things you need to know already disscused.

  4. Vagabond is right I remember the Booby controvasy, And god help you if you owened up to useing a Minky, or rolly poly stripping method, there is a place for tradition but why condem some one for ringing the changes,

I once for a laugh got a fishery stocky to rise to a cast fag butt, now that was unsporting, getting them addicted to nicotine!!! ;)

    Cheatttttttttttttttttttttttttttt boo hissssssssssssssssssssssssss :P:D

  5. Never done any good with them :wallbash: perhaps i don't use them enough!!!.I do like to fish buzzers/nymphs,but will resort to lures and egg flies if the need arises,oh and indicators with buzzers :yeah: .

Yes agree far too much snobbery involved.I have even been told 'you should not fish for stillwater rainbows or browns, only wild river fish',yea right, like the rivers near me hold a good head of wild browns  .

If its legal and the desired method is working on the day,so be it.

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm,i might become a yob with a blob yet :clap2:

  6. Thank you Mr Chris  just spreading myself about ,to get more info on the fisheries. ive got the urge to try lechlade but its convincing the wife and the weather  nowing my luck it will be the mere again :schmoll: even i like a change now and again, i suppose at a push i could do syon :schmoll: Gaz

    OHhhhhhhhhhhhhh its YOU :wallbash::yeah::yucky:

    Splashing out aint yer :clap2:

  7. anyone been to lechlade recently, i keep seeing posts saying its really a winter venue, so why isnt it that good during the so called warmer months

Also is frensham any good , posts are saying its rather peety now :headhurt:

    Cheers Gaz

No,but reports from another angler suggests that there is/has been an algal bloom and its hard, thats Lechlade.Busheyleaze is ok i understand.

Can't be of much help on Frensham i'm afraid. Some rate it,others not so.Below is a link to some fisheries, might be of some help.

  8. If the trout fishing is crap in hot weather, why not try catching the carp on fly gear? Good sport and a cracking scrap during periods when the trout are off the feed.

    Way to go :D :D

  9. I was talking to a chap tonight who used to do a lot of fly fishing. He's not done much in recent seasons and has been a bit discouraged of late after turning up at a couple of his opld haunts only to discover that they've been turned into carp puddles.

I tried to persuade him that the river is the place to fish but he was raised on stillwater fly fishing and wants to start back with that.

Can anyone recomend any smallish day ticket fly waters within 30 or 40 miles of Birmingham ?

Hurst Farm up at Bridgnorth-if you need info/directions please ask me.Rainbows and browns, catch and kill and catch and release,£15 two fish and c/r after.

Delbury Hall,Diddlebury-Ludlow area(MIGHT BE A BIT TOO FAR),cracking place, two lakes,c/r and catch and kill, very reasonable at £15 five hours take one and release as many as you want to.

    Cound bettween Bridgnorth and Shrewsbury

Hanchurch,up towards Stoke.Think there are two small pools.

Above link might help, just go to the home page and type in the area's you are interested in

  10. I can think of a few trout waters with not only carp in,seems not to make much difference.

Was you at woodchurch or Tenterden by any chance-both these venues have a fair head of carp?.

  11. Hi Andy

    Welcome to AN

Don't know the venue so can't advise on specific flies. First thing to do is ask the owner and look in the log. That will tell you what has been catching. Remember though that people will only catch on what they are using so if everyone is using a cats whisker, that will be the most successful fly when maybe a different pattern would have been more successful if anyone tried it. Rather than sticking to particular patterns go for "types" size etc. and remember it is probably the depth you fish at and the speed of your retrieve that is more important than the specific fly pattern. Most of us would probably be more effective if we followed our own advice from time to time ;)

Luck with the fishing and let us know how you got on.

    Dave

Will go along with the depth theory, find that and you will probably find em.Forecast is not good, cold easterly wind and wet so fish might be a bit deeper than of late.

  12. Hi forum, please can someone you uses a mastery series gpx floater tell me what line rating to go for, I'm fishing with a Hardy's demon 9ft 5 weight, its just that i read a article on the line which said it was a little heavy so i don't know to go for a 4 weight or a 5 weight can anybody help please?

No expert, but theoritically a 5 weight rod should be able to cope with a six weight line etc etc etc, will just load the rod up faster.Think i would stick to the line rating-rather than possibly underload the rod with a four weight

  13. Hi,

I've been a course angler for loads of years, but am now taking up Fly fishing - which is a completly different kettle of fish (forgive the pun!). I need a book that is REALLY basic, that I can follow step by step on how to tackle up etc.

    Any recommendations please.

Why don't you google for info, should be plenty out there,or some of the specialist fly fishing web sites can offer pictures and info.No real mystery to it.Depends on what you are going to do-ie rivers or stillwaters, then are they large or medium to small!.Choose your tackle accordingly, seek advice from your local tackle shop or even go for a lesson or two before getting any gear.

A 6 or 7 weight rod would suffice as a general guide for small to medium stillwaters with a matching line, possibly a floater to start with.Reel need not be an expensive jobby, plenty of decent priced large arbour reels out there.

Backing line, fly line some flies and away you go :D

  14. Not an easy one-all comes down to personal choice really.Guess a 9.5/10 ft rod would be an advantage on a reservoir or loch, more so if fishing from a boat.Don't know the river,so really can't comment.

A seven weight rod should cover most eventualities-but may be too much for the river!!!!!!!.Again, depends how wide the river is,is it open etc etc.If its nothing more than a stream and well treelined etc then a shorter lighter rod would be in order.

Personally if you can run to it a longer 7 weight for your loch and resevoir trips and a shorter lighter rod for your river work you would probably be better off.

  15. I used to fish any method on the Reservoirs at Hammersmith back in the seventies, before taking up fly fishing.

Bear in mind,as the water warms, the fish will be higher in the water.Bright sun can push them down though.Float fishing with worm used to be productive.Just alter depth if nothing forthcoming. As stated above, try the margins rather than hurling anything out as far as you can from the off.

Personally, unless the water is very cold,i would go with the float as opposed to ledgering.

  16. JW superspecialist 12 foot 2 piece 2.5 test rod.dark green blank red whippijgs and locking reel seat, with bag.

Nice condition, reasonably light use.Nice rod for carp, light pike and barbel.

    £15 or offer,plus delivery,can be collected(surrey).

Please note the rod is too long for parcel post and would need courier delivery.

  17. Fox 12 foot 3lb test rangemaster carp rod.Nice condition, light usage with bag.

    £30 or sensible offer,plus delivery.Can be collected(surrey)

Please note the rod is too long for parcel post and would need to be sent courier.

  18. As a smoker i can see both sides of the argument.I must admit that being in a smoke filled room particularly when eating is most unpleasant or in confined spaces such as when flying etc. However i do feel the ban is overkill. Many of the restaurants pubs etc have ample provision to accommodate smokers and non smokers alike. The ban is here and its not going to go away, infact i can see it being extended, and yes i feel the minority won.

As i work outside,my hope is that ALL the gas guzzling vehicles chucking out all those pollutants are taken off the road or priced out of existance,as i am sure that they are doing me just as much harm if not more than my smoking. However i guess there are an awful lot of non smoking 4x4 drivers out there who would not agree :rolleyes:

  19. Hi all. Happy new year :D

Just a quick question, has anyone got any recomendations for a fly line (WF7 intermediate or slow sink) at around the 20/25 quid mark.

    Cheers.

    Sheepy.

Shakespeare Worcestershire.Look on ebay, should pick one up from around £13.From the same guy,£13 posted-look on Complete fisher forums(www.completefisher.com),his name is Pitsford Pirate, used him a few times,he is fine.
