  1. Use as long a leader as you can handle.9 Feet is a decent length, longer if you can manage. If you use a level lenght of mono you can either go straight through to the fly with it,or you can add a tippet of a lower b/s if required-say flourocarbon.Just use a water knot to add it.

Infact you can make up a tapered leader this way.Start with say three feet of 10lb,three feet of 7 or eight pound and three feet or more of your chosen b/s -5/6lb to finish-hey presto a tapered leader .Some do not like to have knots along the leader in this way,but personally, have not had a problem.

  2. You need Greg(Long) who sometimes posts here, perhaps pm him,he fishes the western half of Ireland.

Have only Salmon fished once over there on the Mulcair River down near Limerick-it was very very cheap fishing, assume it still is.Lots of small brownies in that river as well.

Try taking a look at the Fisheries sites, usually loads of info to pull on.

  3. Rods are/can be a very personal choice. If you get the chance to handle any before purchase, then do so.

Nothing wrong with the Shakey Alpha reel.As good as anything in the £30 range in my opinion and certainly as good as lureflash or Airflo reels at that price.

Worcestershire lines are excellent.Don't forget you can get em for £12.50 over on Completefisher.co.uk form Pitsford Pirate  including postage.I can vouch for his service.

Mill End lines could be slightly short or faded or anything slightly misscoloured etc.I had one from Mullarkeys for some occasional use on a 3 weight-can't find anything wrong with it!!!!!.

You don't have to use tapered leaders at all.A level length of mono will do fine to start with-some actually prefer to use this all the time-again a personal choice really.

Selectafly are pretty good with their range and service.Have used them many times, although not for a year or so as i now tie my own.

Everyone will give you their own choices of favorite patterns,However,Damsels, cats, buzzers, hoppers,Grhe's,Ptn's and fritz lures would almost certainly be a reasonable choice as a starting point and should catch you fish wherever you decide to fish.

I'm sure you will get some more info come in -good luck

If you Pm me i might be able to knock some flies out for you-not proffesional quality :headhurt: ,but they work

  4. I left the fly in the water whilst trying to sort out a tangle in my line as I was unpicking the tangle I noticed that the line was paying out into the lake I lifted the rod tip and found the crab hanging on for dear life, it was the first time I had come across one so It took me a bit off gaurd.

Crabs in fresh water I ask you

You can pick up 'crabs' anywhere mate,be careful :D :D ;)

  5. Don't know what the reel is like, however i did used to have a fladen 6/7 and thought it fine for the money.

Take a look at Worcestershire lines from Shakespeare,as good as they get,or the Glider.Try Pitsford Pirate over on www.completefisher.co.uk,£12.50,unboxed,usual retail £30 for a Worcestershire.Or take a look on ebay at Redditch lines.Do not go for an Airflo floater-pants.

  6. Thanks for that. Sounds like a similar deal to Grafham. It probably makes a lot of difference if you know where the fish are likely to be under certain kinds of conditions at specific times, the sort of knowledge that only comes from having fished there a good few times. It's got to be Bewl as the next big day out... Anyone know where there are fishing reports from Bewl?

Chris on www.completefisher.com posts them up,there is a bewl fly fishers web site as well-just google it

    hope that helps

  7. `Not fished there for donkeys years. However,i understand that the place is crawling with cormorants, hence its nickname cormorant city :yucky::unsure: .

I fished Nortons not that long ago(which is not a million miles away from there) and the guy there said that it was crawling with them,he too having a few problems himself.Have also read posts elswhere about the problem and subsequently the poor fishing that goes with it.

Personally i think i would rather try elswhere.

Shame as it used to be quite a popular venue.

  8. Well done.

I/we fished Bewl last saturday for the first time(boat)with our club..Pretty daunting,so big.Ended up loosing three fish and missing a few.Mate had three and again missed a few.Mine took buzzers and cormorants, mate was on cats.

Some boats comming back blank, some with limits. Most action bettween the jetty and the main pleasure boat jetty, and close in.Did try opposite side of dam,but much quieter over there.A few lads tried over by the cages without any luck.Guy fishing from the bank did ok on cats and cormorants, just infront of us,ie to the left of the club house and jetty.

  9. I fished Halliford Mere today for the first time and had a very nice time. Bought a morning ticket - £15 for five hours, 08.00 to 13.00. Caught one and lost one - both on bloodworm imitations. Of the two other guys fishing, by the time I left, one had caght three (the first two in quick succession while I ws still tackling up) and the other had blanked. Nice facilities in a pleasant location although the traffic noise from the dual carriageway is a bit intrusive.

That was Gaz and myself :clap2: i actually managed four after lunch, thinking a blank was on the cards

Small world,Nowwwwwwwwwww if you had said hi i'm mr toad :D:rolleyes::D

  10. Rutland.Give Halliford Mere a try.Its not a push over, but a pleasant place to be.Had a day there today. Two of us had four each, all around 2.5/3lb and lost a fair few as well and missed a few takes.Mainly catch and release, barbless or debarbed hooks.£20 day.Friday and saturday fish 8 am to dusk, all other times shuts at 6pm,closed on mondays.

  11. cheers Kev,

I’m planning to return there at the end of September, when things should have cooled down a bit. I’ve never felt water so warm!

I tried Walthamstow a couple of times last week during the hot days and had nothing, tried all over the two lakes in all the usual places and the usual flies, but nadda. no-one else caught either.

although it's nice to get out in the sun and the warm weather, I’ve learnt not to expect much.

    do you fish Colwick much?

    cheers wozza mozza

Walthamstow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!,Cormorant city they call it :yucky:

  12. Thanks for all the replies. Will definitely check out Rib Valley lakes, that looks like a good option, as does Frensham. Feels like summer already, and I'll bet there's soon going to be some action on dries. Might have a go at Haliford Mere this weekend, will check back and let you know how I got on if I do -- bet I blank after doing so well at Syon!

In this heat-best of luck

Went to Duncton Mill yesterday(saturday),very hard. All fish taken by club members were taken deep and fish tightly shoaled.Either on em or you suffered.Too damn hot and sunny ,which just kept them down deep.

  13. all this information is great

i may have to wait a while before i can start because of a tight budget.

but if any one could tell the average price of the recommended rod and reels it would be great

Shakey 'Alpha LA reel around £10,Worcestershire line £12(pm me),thats a saving of £20 odd quid.Fly rod-£!!!!!!,look around ebay, the Fladen Vantage 6/7 weight is not bad,can pick those up reasonably.

You do need a decentish line,as i said, some of them are only good for hanging the washing on :D

  14. What's the biggest fish a 6/7 rod could put up with?

    (sorry to hijack your thread)

Josh, all i can say is i have had rainbows to 10lb-130z on a 7 weight, mate has had them to 13lb on a 6 weight.A bit like -say carp once they get to doubles they do tend to plod a bit and bore rather than dash around all over the place,so just carefull playing will see you ok.I will be trying out my 3 weight tommorrow :clap2: ,with fish to doubles available :D:headhurt::D:D .

With a 6/7 weight line ,i don't go below 5lb flouro, more usually 6lb and sometimes 8lb,some fisheries stipulate a minimum breaking strain leader anyway.

  15. A days casting lessons is a good idea.Thought i could cast reasonably well, until i was shown otherwise by an expert. No need to spend mega bucks on gear.If you can,try out various rods,as what suites one person, won't suit another.Probably best to go for a middle to tip actioned rod-6/7 weight is a fair bet for small to medium stillwaters and rivers. There are loads of reels out there.A large arbour reel is preferable as you won't get so much memory in the line.Shakespeare do a L A reel-'Alpha' only around £10,belive me they are better than some of the £30 reels out there.Would suggest a decent line.Worcestershires are very good, can put you in touch with someone who sells them for silly money.Avoid Airflo floaters-they are awfull.I just picked up a mill end from Mullarkeys (for very occasional use) Silly cheap and can find no fault with it.Masterline 'debut 'lines are not bad, with backing already attached. There are some damn awfull lines out there though,so beware. The Lureflash lines are not recomended-imho anyway.Take a look at www.firsttackle.co.uk,very good service and post free goods.www.selectafly.com,very good for flies, good service-spend a tenner and get ten free, can't be bad :clap2: .

Take a look at www.fishtec.co.uk,they quite often have offers on 'Airflo' rods, either cosmetic seconds or without a tube etc at a considerable saving. The Airlo MT, rod is quite nice, decent action and fittings.

    Good luck
