  1. I'm always very suprised that the industry hasn't, for it's own good (positive PR and suchlike), introduced licence checking at commercial venues. I understand that they feel A. it isn't their job B. attendance figures may fall, but is that really a responsible stance on the issue?

Money speakes volume's though,if having a valid license meant that commercial water's had to check it and refuse those without one, what do you think would happen revenue would fall, so they would'nt bother checking and we are back to sqaure one again.

More input from the E.A is the answer, every commercial water should be made to pay for a operating licence. Then the E.A could do the normal checks on anglers licence's and if they find some one fishing without one the operating licence should/could be withdrawn.but hey that mean the E.A

giving a dam....which they do not seem to.

  2. I'd forgotten all about it! I'm way too busy at present but will eventually get round to it.

One thing I will say now is that Metcheck are no longer as good as they were, at least in my area. It seems to correspond to when they went onto their new system of dividing the country up into smaller units. This should have improved forecasts, but hasn't. They're still very accurate for general weather, amount of rain/snow etc. However their temperatures are way out.

As a result I now use a combination of Metcheck, the Met Office & Wunderground.

I do not touch the met ofice for my region, and thats since the met office moved to Exeter :o

Sites i use are the Weatheroutlook and NetWeather both have forums with link to the lastest model output, you can pick up a lot know how with these as to whats gong to happen.

  3. Smudger, you illustrate my point perfectly, because I post in a "Pro Angling Trust " manner, your "opinion" is I somehow represent them! er, well no, I do not mate,.

Just because it is posted on an internet forum does not make it fact, opinions are just that , opinions, and from my experience of angling forums, usually ill informed opinions,

So the question remains, just how accurate and informed are the anglers opinions that post on internet forums?

The more I read on them, the less convinced I am of their worth.

    Budgie, well old mate, what I ALWAYS suggest, and it is only a suggestion, is this;

Contact Angling Trust directly and get the official view/answer /reply, because internet forums are a very dodgey place to get the facts IMO of course!

PS, Gozzer (John) I am only as tenacious and "bulldog like" as the Naysayers, the difference is, I use the facts to offer debate, sadly, most anglers think their opinions are the facts.........ask Smudger.

Don't you think you get YOUR facts right

before spouting off. Where have i said that my opinion are FACTS  there are just my opinions

and i am entitled to air them on this public forum until the owner say's otherwise

If you think internet forums are not worth a damm and are dodgy......

Then why the hell are you posting on this one and others.

Me smells a troller <_< i am sure the Angling Trust must cock a hoop over your methods of drumming up support :o talk about alienating your core target group..keep up the good work

you might end up as the trusts president. :D

  4. Smudger,When are you going to learn your opinions on here or any other angling forum do not count for much? who do you think reads this?

    I have a question for you Smudger and anyone else that is not a member of Angling Trust;

How do you communicate your views to the people representing angling?,

    Here's another one for you,

Do you think remaining as a single unrepresented angler is really the best way forward?

I am away for a few days now, but I look forward to reading the enlightened replies I will undoubtedly get on here.

I would rather not have my views communicated if we as anglers are represented by person's such as you

If you ignore the amount of threads/views and opinions that expressed in this one forum alone!

Then you really should stand down from your postion in the Trust

The trouble with angling bodies in the past is that are only represented a small minority of anglers

    mostly Match anglers

The vast numbers of anglers are pleasure anglers until an angling body is set up and can communicate with them, then it is all of a nothing really as far i am concerned.........

but thats just my OPINION :D

  5. As long as the chub don't mind, I don't mind! Spring will be very welcome this year, though.

True, but it's nice to see some proper winter weather rather the than mild, wet, dross our winter's have been for the last decade or so.

Nice to have a normal year in 2008,instead of another baking year,Hope 2009 is the same.

  6. Just a heads up for the coming weekend /nextweek

Weather is forecast to turn very cold again over the weekend and into next week

with a strong easterly wind and snow flurries. Tempertures could be close to freezing during the day in Eastern and Southern area's, would expect servere frost to develope during the night time.

Snow showers becoming heavy on eastern coastal areas, with a threat of more general snow

later on in the week towards the weekend.

Wrap up warm in you are thinking of going fishing it will feel bitter in the wind :o

Might even be colder than the christmas/new year cold spell :o

  7. Perhaps on a canal it is !

Oh it's not like one of these midlands canal emma. All shrouded in trees, plenty of cover.

Over half of it runs along the Exe estuary open and wild

It was frozen all along it's entire length in the recent cold snap :o ,Even in tropical Devon we get

    bad weather you know :o:rolleyes:

  8. I've now moved to Exeter, after a few years in Leamington Spa and a year in Southampton - AN advice gratefully received for those locations in the past.

Once again, I'm calling on the collective knowledge of AN regarding local fishing. I've joined E&DAA and has some success with pike on the Exeter Canal, but would now like to get a decent fish or two from the River Exe, any species.

By quirk of fate (or rather my profession), I have occasional permission to fish Trew's Weir. I know some people would give their granny to fish this bit of water, but it's been frustratingly slow, so am looking at the E&DAA stretch downstream.

Any advice, I'm not expecting anyone to give away their hotspots, just something to get going with. I quite fancy a roving approach for chub (or whatever) this weekend, what do you think prospects are?

    Cheers

    Andrew

  9. Hi all

After landing my biggest chub ever on sunday :D (don't ask i never had a set of scales or a camera  )i want to make a effort to catch another big chub. Will use the normal baits cheese etc, but would like to use small deads as well in winter but the river i want to fish has pike in it can i use a wire trace when fishing for chub. if so what Breaking strain wire should i use if any at all, should add i will be using a single size 4 or bigger if needed and not trebles. any comments please. cheers

  10. There are also a quite few "club" waters that are HEAVILY stocked, and not only with carp.

The statement(?) regarding blind men shows the ignorance of someone who has probably never fished a "commercial" in winter...............

    Den

Yes thats correct i have never had the "pleasure " of fishing a commercial autumn, winter, summer, or spring. B)B) And as i have said i no wish to, but with all fishing you take the bad times as you do the good times :) And may i say i think you view is also biased as you only seem to fish commercials.Fishing in winter is much harder on ANY water especially rivers.

PS what do you mean by club waters

  11. quote from Mat Newman

Why would a blind man fishing on a commercial fishery have more chance of catching than on a river?

Because i often stated that anyone can catch on a commercial

I am sorry if you took a posting from me as an insult. But your posting insinuating that i had magical powers was off as far as i was concerned i am nothing special and hope and wish that i and regarded

    as that. B)

However i am big enought to apologise if i offend. As we have both stated we are clearly worlds apart in our fishing and maybe our idea of fishing

I will say again, i wish you well and hope you enjoy your fishing. :D

  12. What sort of arguement is that?It seems you and I are worlds apart in logic as well  I officially invite you to a commercial of my choice for me to see your amazing art in motion - I am sure that others would like to join us to see your obvious magical powers in action
If you have to say "what sort of argument is that" to a clearly laid out statement then not only are we worlds apart in logic then we are worlds apart in something else. You clearly being further away then me DAs you can only reply with non argumentive replys heres my two penith And i have no magical powers nor have i said so. It seems you are only able to take the easy option not only in fishing but in any debate/argument and can only react with petty comebacks As for your offer of fishing a commercial water of your choice....no thanks i like a challange not a certainty in my fishing B) and if i catch non then so be it i learn from that experiance, not go to another carp hole and hope they are biting there  I would invite you to fish a river but suspect that the sight of all that flowing water might upset and confuse you what with having to stay awake and watch a float. No bait alarms, no radio blaring, no bait boat,no self hooking rigs, you get the message .eh :D As i have said i hope you enjoy your type of fishing but.......you don't know what your missing:lol:
So is this blind man fishing with or without floodlights? B)
Depend's if it's foggy  if not i don;t think it matters :D
  13. As I have already said this fishery operates between the hours of 6:00am and 9:00pm. The lights normally go on about 6 so this aids you in fishing a bit later. This is not on all the waters by the way.

Your last comment made me laugh - Check out the defination for angling

an·gling /ˈæŋglɪŋ/ Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation[ang-gling] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation

–noun the act or art of fishing with a hook and line, usually attached to a rod.

Surely this is what we all do or do you use a diffent method?

Put a blind man on a commercial water and tell him to strike every so often, result he will more than likelyl catch a fish during his time spent on said water.

Tell same blind man to the same thing on a river....what odd's will you give to him catching a fish now?

    Mat

You and i are clearly world's apart in the world of angling.

i wish you well and hope you enjoy your type of fishing

  14. LOL! The fishery in question operatest from 6:00am till 9:00pm which means that the fish have at least 9 hours respite in between!

Surely now you are attacking all angelers that fish through the night! What do you want to do next, ban night fishing?

As I have already mentioned these lights are simply an aid to anglers in that they can see tackle etc not so that we can see the fish.

And no I did not contradict myself with my first comments I simply wrote that I love to fish at whatever location as long as I have a chance of catching a few. I did not write that I wanted to catch 100lb plus every outing!

Sorry but to me it sounded very contradicting of yourselve. And where did i mention you catching 100lb plus :huh:

And no i do not want night fishing banned,i just don't think fishing intensively on higly stocked waters

day and night is good fish welfare no matter how short a time it is.

what is stop a matching going on for 3-4 hours then some one coming in and staying on after the match has finnished and fishing through the night, if no fishing where allowed on the match lake until next day then fine.

But carp water owners are in for the money, clearly and patently obviously not for the fishes welfare

or this waters would not be so highly stocked :angry:

In this country now there are people who go angling and people who go to catch fish.....

i know what i am, seems alot of people have yet to work out what they are. <_<

  15. smudger - I doubt the lighting will have any effect on fish health or fish mortality.

They eat when they are hungry and have senses designed to locate food at night unless they are a purely day-feeding species in which case I would not expect the lights to fool them into thinking it was day time unless it was really bright and some sort of full spectrum bulb which isn't the case.

Oh come on newt :o fish that are caught and handled 24/7will not survive for long.Surely it must be the case that these fish will suffer some sort of side affect from the stress of constant feed going in day and night, the competion from other fish will make it imposssible for them to ignore the food put in so surely a proprortion will end up being caught time and time again until they associate bait/food with being caught and then they will become reluctant to feed, the condition and well being of the fish will go down.

It's all down to money and the "must catch at any cost mentality"it really is not angling at all

it's like shooting fish in a barrel

If people have limited time to catch fish, then take up another pastime. The sooner these hole's in the ground are shut down the better.

Lets get the youngsters back to rivers and canals and teach proper watercraft and angling skills

that will teach them patience and idea's of how to overcome angling challenge's.after all thers so much to angling then catching fish.this is being knocked out of the heads of youngsters today

Many anglers feel they have had a bad day if they have not caught, catching the fish is just the bonus

not the be all and end all of a days fishing.
