I like the mushroom compost idea. A quick check shows it's available in bulk at a reasonable price.
Irish peat moss is also available, but the only cheap supplier I could find is collection only from Spalding.

I don't know but going through the feedback about the compost on Wickes I am not the only person losing tomatoes using it :
Wickes Peat Free Multi-Purpose Compost - 50L | Wickes.co.uk https://share.google/N2Qp6B9v45ile2MfK
The green zelouts dont seem to realise in most places peat is being laid down almost as fast as it's being excavated now .The Holes left behind can be far more beneficial than the bog it's from (fishing (wink) I will get peat bales next year but even that is being changed ,the local tree grower can only get it at a decent price from Lithuania and that's now mixed with 25% tree mass (cannot hold water and needs tons of nitrogen as rotting tree pulp uses it all up) You can see the crap in this stuff it's definitely pulped hay and a fraction of sedge peat ,water goes straight through it and it dries out in a day ,the rootball shrinks in the hanging baskets and the water bypasses it and comes straight out the drainage holes .I resort to using 500ml plastic cups frozen and put in twice a day .The water then slowly permeates the compost rather than being diverted .The pots are not so bad each one is a builders bucket with a few holes 2 inches above the bottom and the bucket itself sitting in a 4 inch deep tray full of water ,the roots can be seen coming out the holes to drink .
Pulped hay would be a prime candidate for grazon.
I ordered my compost from Amazon this year and while it's not peat, it has done okay, when mixed with perlite.
My tomatoes and a couple of fruit trees went into these, which are a bit bigger than a builder's bucket.

I am still here ,been busy in the garden ,moaning the compost I bought has killed everything it's touched (poxy peat free crap) but on a new tablet and the layout is different so don't see the AN link that used to be first in line .
Lovely someone misses me ,thanks for that ,Dave
Relieved to see that you haven't kicked the bucket, old fruit.
You had us worried for a while!
Could your compost be contaminated with Grazon? If there is any chance, chuck it out. Do nor chuck it on the compost heap etc, because it's incredibly persistent.

I was wondering the same thing the other day.
It's been a couple of weeks since he signed in.
Hopefully all is well.

Terrible news.
Condolences to John's friends and family.

Just one more reason why the UK needs a DOGE.
Plenty more here:

Silly question.
Is it purely pneumatic, like an air gun, or are those nails propelled by an explosive?

I think they're more about feeding with real maggots and having a bait that doesn't get smashed up by small fish before something decent finds it.
If you don't want to visit a tackle shop, there are plenty of options. Pellets or breadpunch are always good standbys.

I recon an aspidistra would be easy eith death by dryness or bog .Unlike myself she has no regime so things suffer .A goldfishes memory (actually they have ok memories) due to her epilepsy don't help .I program most important things by Alexa (my memory is fading fast) the day before but she just forgets lol
Love Alexa we have Alexa enabled stuff in every room and two sheds if something pops in my head i tell it to remind me because i know by experience going to write it down will be forgotten in seconds .Its also great on calenders it will tell me at set times before an event ,a week before so great for sending cards and the day before etc it will also keep reminding you every hour until you tell it to stop ,great for when something crops up and you forget after it reminds you at x time
Not only am i a serial collector i am a serial planner ,sad chesters1 dont ask how long i research stuff before buying it
That reminds me i got some date palms from seed last year ,no sign of them i guess they died under her care i had forgotten about them i grew several
Got a couple of palms in the house, and I'm looking for a Kentia palm.
Trouble is that they're expensive as hell and seeds aren't available.
-
Yes they are the original version ,i just use the cheap granules in 1 ltr tubs aswell as a sprinkle of water retension crystals.
I had problems over the years with blossom emd rot on one particular but very tasty tomato so i started using a expensive feed including calcium which countered it to a certain aspect but its stupidly expensive so this year i added a tablespoon of garden lime to each bucket (i grow my toms in builders buckets which sit in gravel trays full of water to stop splitting ) hopefully back to basics will be ok .
Hopefully this year will be better than last and i can curse the sun vs the rain
Not got any living potted houseplants my mrs easily kills spider planst and those chip shop succulants so anything else has no chance
The ability to kill spider plants, jade plants and Christmas cactus is a rare skill. Have you tried an aspidistra?
I ordered those slow release clusters for my big houseplants like palms, and they seem to be doing okay on them.

I just got some of these for my potted plants:

It was certainly busy .The trouble is unless its speeded up you dont notice them . Tthey must be very high as in realtime they hardly are seen moving .
Unfortunately or rather fortunately we rarely get planes here just a few into Farnborough and they are not that far up when they come over so we dont know how many planes up in the stratosphere are plodding about .
He uses infra red so without that few would ever be seen in real time
A lot of his other vids are sped up 64x.
This one clearly is too, because you can clearly see the background stars process.

I'd have said that most were aircraft, rather than satellites, as there is a clear radiant point in the lower right and satellites don't leave a heat trail behind them. The moon and planets were pretty obvious. No idea what the large slowly rising object on the right was though.

Sorry to hear that Mrs C has been in the wars, Hopefully she makes a full recovery, and you get to avoid future bum torture.

Sorry for your loss, Steve.
I never met either of you, but always enjoyed your posts and reports of the fish-ins and BBQs.

Sony to hear that you've been in the wars, John.
A shot knee and neurological problems have left me very limited at times.
I've had to use a stick, but never a frame.
For me at least, stripping the kit back to the very basics and getting a good chair were key.

A very different talent:
-
Just ask for a spec sheet....
Lots of super cheap UPS kit on Ali if you're up for the Heath Robinson option, although if you already have the battery, a £10 solar controller and a couple of cheapo panels should cover you - almost all assume a 12v load and have USB outputs.
-
Weirdly, I've decided that I'm going to install PV solar, a battery and 12v lighting when I finally move house.
It'll be LiFePo based, because it's a safe chemistry and give the best bang for a buck.
Happy new year yourself.
-
A UPS is only an option if your cell site/telephone exchange has power.
Starlink solves the issue - but at a price.

Wishing all those who occasionally drop by Anglersnet a merry Christmas and a happy, healthy and prosperous new year.
