  1. How long is a piece of string

reminds me of a conversation i had with a skipper last week He was berating his son (in his absence) because the car he had loaned the skipper had the oil light on, checked the oil nowt on the stick!

Son is in the Navy and has been in the Faulklands for 2 months what ever happend to daily checks !!

Maintenence on inboards should be very similar to vehicle engines. but general by being vehicle engines grafted into boats there is a bit more care to take and observation to do. Water hoses the become hard with age and crack or contaminated with oil and collapse on the suction side of the cooling circuit. Fuel pipes the vibrate and chafe through. Fuel contamination through using drums of fuel and in some cases algal growth in fuel supplies The real answer is little and often always a good look round before you go and again when you get back

Its all about staying alive realy

  2. Wow, hard one to call. On one hand justice has to be seen to be done but you do hear of numerous cases where the defendant has been warned time and again. Wonder if there was anything else in the woodwork.

Its a shame the article does not state whether the offender was a licenced fisherman or recreational/hobby fisherman. Up in yorkshire licences are still issued and the holders have been known to report illegal fishing. The main reason people get proscecuted is the Riparian owners who control the Atlantic Salmon trust and have support in high places.

Now that most rivers in england have been cleaned up (after the industrial era ) Salmon and trout are on the up even in rivers like the tees and the tyne

  3. Hi PAV I know this might sound like telling your granny to suck eggs but are you wetting the knot nad line before you pull the knot tight to lubricate and prevent the line scuffing/burning

  4. i think you were pairing with mike and howard when i was pairing with tex and mike smith bruces garden naught but a seed whiting and baby chats legged it first haul waste of diesel and waste of fish. What do they say up here give it its life

  5. You don't have to have a license to use nets or longlines from a boat - you only need a license if you intend to sell your catch. There may be other bylaw licenses needed to set them from the shore too. Certainly here in Guernsey you can set nets & trots on the shore and sell your catch without licensing restrictions other than the usual MLS which applies to everybody. In summer some areas are closed to nets & trots, but that's only to protect swimmers & other beach users.

here on the mainland there are plenty of restrictions max of 100m,for none licenced minimum of 5 mtrs above head/float line at all states of tide its a bit of a mine field for licenced or none licenced to stay within the law and these conditions vary througout the year :rtfm:

  6. Why would a net be illegal ?

Hi Glenn in scotland i think monofilfment are illegal but thread type nylon are not

In england there are many restrictions on the type and size of mesh that can be used

scotland is all about salmon and the riparian owners

Apathy is the glove into which evil slips it,s hand.

o what big hands you have slackline :clap2::clap2:

Me big hands HA HA what about those shovels of yours and darlicks. Who needs outboards when you have paddles like those :bigemo_harabe_net-193::bigemo_harabe_net-163: you two could give that bloke (fearthehands) a run for his money

  8. Hi Topfly,

The meeting was open to all anglers. The doc I think organised the meeting on behalf of Yalasa and publicised the meeting on all the north east forums. After getting a real hard time from Nigel in the winter for not attending a couple of meetings I made sure I didn't miss this one. As you would have noticed the initial post about the meeting in my forum was made back in winter time. As owner of the forum I placed it in our calendar and kept bumping the subject back to the top of our board the nearer the meeting date got. Unfortunately the owners of other forums thought the topic not worthy of such treatment (maybe I am obsessed and they arent). I have in the passed tried to post info onto other north east forums and met resistance from the site moderators especially with regards to posting links to other info on the net (for example articles on SACN). Infact I was once accused by a forum administrator of being "very ignorant" for posting links onto one of the major north east forums. I conclude the other forums by and large are only interested in posts about fishing.

Needless to say I no longer bother posting links onto that forum and I am reluctant to go there and post anything unless I feel it to be entirely necasserry.

So what to do ? I post the info onto my forum, I go to the tackle shops and put up the posters made by fellow angler Martyn from Scarborough, I drop a poster in at Big cods pub (home to Whitby fishing club) I offer lifts in my car to the meeting (at no cost) and still we get 7 anglers turn up.

No doubt in a few weeks time we will be getting complaints about licences and bag limits etc from those who did not attend.

Ya know what they say Glenn apathy rules if it could be bothered :bigemo_harabe_net-163:

  9. :nono: First question does the by catch system work

    I believe Yes

commercial traget certain species at certain times of the year and in various locations useing aquired knoledge and historical data Due to the vast spread of species on the sea bed there will always be by catch these bys are limited to a max percentage of total catch so why dump godd fish

Second question Should commercials return undersize fish again Yes

For certain species undersize fish have no commercial value or not enough to justify the fuel and running cost of catching In fact some times legal sized fish have in sufficent value and are avoided (bass being one but not the only exception) The answer to under size fish is fishing gear and method square mesh pannels in trawls do work but more needs to be done on this the increase in mesh size for tangle nets has had a marked effect on landings of small fish (Having done quite a bit of wreck netting in the past i have seen the evidence my self. with a mesh of 6" or more the 2 to 3 lb codling and pollock just dont show. and old style 4.5" mesh fished same day same place had plenty of small fish.) ( In Iceland if a gill netter of similar encounter a run of samll fish, the authorities close the area to all fishing)

Third question Max sustainable yield Again Yes

A great idea the only problem is the science is always vague, none existant or contradictory

A fourth idea might just be a closed season on all species. As sea anglers we all know that the cod gather for spawning in the late winter and early spring how about a closure from Feb to May? I believse sand eels spawn in Jan and Feb but in different places so we could give the base of the food chain a rest then Its done for all of our river fish including the Salmonids.

Any other ideas apart from burn the trawlers and hang the crews

  10. In simple terms, what are the performance differences between 2-stroke and 4-stroke outboards? i.e. power output and fuel consumption ratios between a similar sized engine of each?

In simple terms the 2stroke design needs to be reving at a maximum before it becomes most eficent and achieve full power. where as a 4 stroke has a much better power band and much higher torque capability per cc of engine volume this has 2 advantages the power is there from low revs and generally you can swing a larger of greater pitch on the prop (when it get to prop calculations you had best talk to your local witch doctor for this is surely black magic)

  11. Davy, can you point out the cod so that N4lly and Norm know what they look like? :) Also, please explain to Glenn that Hermit crabs are often found around our shores....;)

Hi John i think the codling is the one kissing the hermit crab albeit a very sad looking specimen theres also a whelk or is that the hermitage

  13. Hi Mr M try www.weatheronline.co.uk/sail.htm

select area on the left side of the page and day and time on the right side It has a few popups embedded but they are only Dell ads Gives a full 7 days

  14. No derek steve is bang on no licence required (today that is) there are however rumblings in the halls of power if the marine bill and other conservation bills are any thing to go by you will need a licence to walk on the foreshaw by the end of the decade Lets hope GB the premier doesnt stiff GB the angler

  15. Had a couple of hours on the west pier tonight at Whitby, I wasn't very hopeful when I saw the amount of fresh water coming out the river but that didn't seem to put them off as they were underneath the brown. Had roughly 30 in total. Was a nice night and only 5 of us on the pier - bliss.

  16. Can anyone point me in the right direction to find some big floating beads please. I am after some in 15 or 20 mm size and preferably silver coloured.

They are like the ones on this page from Glasgow angling but they only seem to sell 10mm.

Hi Glennk you could try one of those old style car seat covers that were made from wooden beads (very popular in the 80s/90s) theres hundreds to each seat cover. Boyes do a very good chrome finish paint aerosol for about £3

  17. Talking of braid, has anybody got any suggestions for the best way of snapping braid when you have it fast on a wreck or hard ground? I used to use a piece of ebony that I was given, get plenty of turns around it and I had no problems with it. Has anybody any other suggestions? Did a lot of people find that you could often get your gear back when working braid? I use to just ask the angler to slack off his line and I use to be able to work it so that on the majority of occasions you could feel the gear come free.

What about you lads down south (where you have real tides) do you have any different methods when fishing wrecks on the drift?

    Regards.

As you well know John I am a bit of a rough Tw*t, I normaly wind the drag up fully, point the rod down the line to save the rod and jam the reel with my big fat thumb I can crack 50lb braid like this

But if i am with the darlick we just run up into the tide,as soon as the line is leading astern wind all the slack in and do the above. By getting up into the tide more often than not i get all the terminal gear back (not so easy with 80ft of lumbering steel)

did a punk make your day today?

:clap2: Sounds like good practice to me, but we're all different but that's my sort of skipper, netting fish, making bacon sarnies, brewing the tea, catching bait. That's about 4 skippers rolled into 1. :clap2:

Fished with a skipper in Ireland about 10 years ago out of Burtonport he was a dab hand with the tea, Big aluminium kettle with one tea bag for each angler dumped in with cold water and then brought to the boil (could have tarred her bottom with it  )

Fresh caught makrel fried in a pan that looked like a bilge bailer :yucky: in fat that would have passed as used engine oil :yucky: great days fantastic taste and i diddnt die from it :clap2:

As for fishing he was a bit of a species man, never went further than 1 mile from the cliffs for pollack, ling, cod, makrel, place.whiteing, small skate and even a dover sole all in a six hour trip

  19. Before the COP for passenger vessels most boats in whitby carried a skipper and a crew man / deckie I believe this was required by the port authority. On days when there was plenty of fish going the deckie would look after the paying customers and the skipper would have a go with a rod. I dont ever remember the anglers having to fend for them selves

I can also remember an old guy called Tommy Tabner being a deckie He always had a fag in his mush and could burn through mono nylon with it in an invisible sort of way very quick with the old tangle Ha Ha

  20. does sound better using lighter gear m8, but does it not cause tangles on the boat? as when i,m boatfishing any thing below a 1lb a lead and the trouble starts, ie everyone tangles up. my brother might also be up for a trip with you (if he can use light gear lol) he packed up in the 80s due to what he said its just non stop heavy lifting the jiggers, he remembers the bin bags of fish just using herring as bait.

told him sunday about you using light gear and its the first time in yrs he said he would like to try it, so you must be doing something right

Hi Iggy there's lots of ideas for avoiding tangles one of the best is every one fishes a same or similar weight and type of rig It also helps whe your fellow fisher stay awake and realise when they have a fish towing their gear around the sea bed

  21. Thanks for the link...

Looks like a pretty professional bit of netting. I'm part of an inshore boat owning collective, so may well consider an investment in a throw net.. Just wondering whether you know if one would need a licence to use it? As a net from a boat could be seen as a commercial operation rather than a bit of bait/dinner collecting.. I'll have to check it out..

I know what you mean about the shrimps, they are v.tasty if a little fiddly.

One thing we have got over here on the East coast is an abundance of brown shrimp but the sandeel potential is more than a little un-tapped.. A shrimp on a light running ledger rig might stand a chance of out running the crabs and should appeal to most things that swim..

The net I have has got a 125cm opening, so I can feel a sore back comming on..

Hi dant I have a mate who lives in Jersey, For sand eels he uses a special long tined rake at the low water mark the tines are about 5 or 6 inches long by about 3/16th inch but they are made of high carbon steel so they dont bend. I will ask him for a photo and post it on here

  22. Mike you say thoses guys wont use thoses few fish the guy on the right has 10 kids and the guy on the left has 12 they have a lot of moths to feed now come on . :D

    regards

    paul.

22 bread snappers between them how do they find the time or the cash for a days charter fishing :bigemo_harabe_net-163:
