here on the mainland there are plenty of restrictions max of 100m,for none licenced minimum of 5 mtrs above head/float line at all states of tide its a bit of a mine field for licenced or none licenced to stay within the law and these conditions vary througout the year

Hi Glenn in scotland i think monofilfment are illegal but thread type nylon are not In england there are many restrictions on the type and size of mesh that can be used scotland is all about salmon and the riparian owners

First question does the by catch system work I believe Yes commercial traget certain species at certain times of the year and in various locations useing aquired knoledge and historical data Due to the vast spread of species on the sea bed there will always be by catch these bys are limited to a max percentage of total catch so why dump godd fish Second question Should commercials return undersize fish again Yes For certain species undersize fish have no commercial value or not enough to justify the fuel and running cost of catching In fact some times legal sized fish have in sufficent value and are avoided (bass being one but not the only exception) The answer to under size fish is fishing gear and method square mesh pannels in trawls do work but more needs to be done on this the increase in mesh size for tangle nets has had a marked effect on landings of small fish (Having done quite a bit of wreck netting in the past i have seen the evidence my self. with a mesh of 6" or more the 2 to 3 lb codling and pollock just dont show. and old style 4.5" mesh fished same day same place had plenty of small fish.) In simple terms the 2stroke design needs to be reving at a maximum before it becomes most eficent and achieve full power. where as a 4 stroke has a much better power band and much higher torque capability per cc of engine volume this has 2 advantages the power is there from low revs and generally you can swing a larger of greater pitch on the prop (when it get to prop calculations you had best talk to your local witch doctor for this is surely black magic)

Hi Glennk you could try one of those old style car seat covers that were made from wooden beads (very popular in the 80s/90s) theres hundreds to each seat cover. Boyes do a very good chrome finish paint aerosol for about £3

As you well know John I am a bit of a rough Tw*t, I normaly wind the drag up fully,point the rod down the line to save the rod and jam the reel with my big fat thumb I can crack 50lb braid like this But if i am with the darlick we just run up into the tide,as soon as the line is leading astern wind all the slack in and do the above. By getting up into the tide more often than not i get all the terminal gear back (not so easy with 80ft of lumbering steel) did a punk make your day today?

Before the COP for passenger vessels most boats in whitby carried a skipper and a crew man / deckie I believe this was required by the port authority. On days when there was plenty of fish going the deckie would look after the paying customers and the skipper would have a go with a rod. I dont ever remember the anglers having to fend for them selves I can also remember an old guy called Tommy Tabner being a deckie He always had a fag in his mush and could burn through mono nylon with it in an invisible sort of way very quick with the old tangle Ha Ha

Hi Iggy there's lots of ideas for avoiding tangles one of the best is every one fishes a same or similar weight and type of rig It also helps whe your fellow fisher stay awake and realise when they have a fish towing their gear around the sea bed

Hi dant I have a mate who lives in Jersey, For sand eels he uses a special long tined rake at the low water mark the tines are about 5 or 6 inches long by about 3/16th inch but they are made of high carbon steel so they dont bend. I will ask him for a photo and post it on here
