  1. How long is a piece of string reminds me of a conversation i had with a skipper last week He was berating his son (in his absence) because the car he had loaned the skipper had the oil light on, checked the oil nowt on the stick! Son is in the Navy and has been in the Faulklands for 2 months what ever happend to daily checks !! Maintenence on inboards should be very similar to vehicle engines. but general by being vehicle engines grafted into boats there is a bit more care to take and observation to do. Water hoses the become hard with age and crack or contaminated with oil and collapse on the suction side of the cooling circuit. Fuel pipes the vibrate and chafe through. Fuel contamination through using drums of fuel and in some cases algal growth in fuel supplies The real answer is little and often always a good look round before you go and again when you get back Its all about staying alive realy
  2. Its a shame the article does not state whether the offender was a licenced fisherman or recreational/hobby fisherman. Up in yorkshire licences are still issued and the holders have been known to report illegal fishing. The main reason people get proscecuted is the Riparian owners who control the Atlantic Salmon trust and have support in high places. Now that most rivers in england have been cleaned up (after the industrial era ) Salmon and trout are on the up even in rivers like the tees and the tyne
  3. While your down in clonakilty you could try getting to court macsherry for some charter fishing

    Knots

Hi PAV I know this might sound like telling your granny to suck eggs but are you wetting the knot nad line before you pull the knot tight to lubricate and prevent the line scuffing/burning
  5. Cheers for that John Letter said all clear at 16months down the line still got the reversal to have but feel a lot better about things I diddnt reaaly feel down but i do now feel up
  6. i think you were pairing with mike and howard when i was pairing with tex and mike smith bruces garden naught but a seed whiting and baby chats legged it first haul waste of diesel and waste of fish. What do they say up here give it its life
  7. here on the mainland there are plenty of restrictions max of 100m,for none licenced minimum of 5 mtrs above head/float line at all states of tide its a bit of a mine field for licenced or none licenced to stay within the law and these conditions vary througout the year
  8. Hi Glenn in scotland i think monofilfment are illegal but thread type nylon are not In england there are many restrictions on the type and size of mesh that can be used scotland is all about salmon and the riparian owners
  9. Me big hands HA HA what about those shovels of yours and darlicks. Who needs outboards when you have paddles like those you two could give that bloke (fearthehands) a run for his money
  10. Ya know what they say Glenn apathy rules if it could be bothered
  11. First question does the by catch system work I believe Yes commercial traget certain species at certain times of the year and in various locations useing aquired knoledge and historical data Due to the vast spread of species on the sea bed there will always be by catch these bys are limited to a max percentage of total catch so why dump godd fish Second question Should commercials return undersize fish again Yes For certain species undersize fish have no commercial value or not enough to justify the fuel and running cost of catching In fact some times legal sized fish have in sufficent value and are avoided (bass being one but not the only exception) The answer to under size fish is fishing gear and method square mesh pannels in trawls do work but more needs to be done on this the increase in mesh size for tangle nets has had a marked effect on landings of small fish (Having done quite a bit of wreck netting in the past i have seen the evidence my self. with a mesh of 6" or more the 2 to 3 lb codling and pollock just dont show. and old style 4.5" mesh fished same day same place had plenty of small fish.) ( In Iceland if a gill netter of similar encounter a run of samll fish, the authorities close the area to all fishing) Third question Max sustainable yield Again Yes A great idea the only problem is the science is always vague, none existant or contradictory A fourth idea might just be a closed season on all species. As sea anglers we all know that the cod gather for spawning in the late winter and early spring how about a closure from Feb to May? I believse sand eels spawn in Jan and Feb but in different places so we could give the base of the food chain a rest then Its done for all of our river fish including the Salmonids. Any other ideas apart from burn the trawlers and hang the crews
  12. In simple terms the 2stroke design needs to be reving at a maximum before it becomes most eficent and achieve full power. where as a 4 stroke has a much better power band and much higher torque capability per cc of engine volume this has 2 advantages the power is there from low revs and generally you can swing a larger of greater pitch on the prop (when it get to prop calculations you had best talk to your local witch doctor for this is surely black magic)
  13. Hi John i think the codling is the one kissing the hermit crab albeit a very sad looking specimen theres also a whelk or is that the hermitage
