  1. Hi all Our club "Poole Bay Small Boat Angling Cub" is holding an open boat competition on the 27th November. It is a best specimen competition with prizes for the best specimen flat and round fish. There are also Junior prizes available. There will be optional pools for heaviest flat and round fish. The club has put up £500 cash prizes and has secured a large prize table with support form some big names such as Lowrance, Icom, Raymarine, Indespension. Most all the local tackle shops and marine associated businesses have contributed making this the best prize list we have ever had. You can expect to See a VHF, Sounder, GPS, Box Trailer, Tackle vouchers, Rods, Reels, Flare packs, Engine services, Haul out and storage plus a whole load more up for grabs. The prizes are expected to top £2700 in value Some of the main points are  Signing in is at Baiter slipway Poole from 7.30am with the competition starting at 8.30am. Bacon rolls and hot drinks available from 7am  The weigh in will also be at Baiter from 3:45pm with scales closing promptly at 5pm.  The prize giving is to be at the Mariner Club, West Quay Road (a short Drive from Baiter) where food will be provided for the competitors. The licensed bar will be open to purchase refreshments. Cost to enter is £15 per head which includes free use of the slipway and car park (donated by Poole Borough Council) and food at the presentation. You can fish the comp from private or charter boats. If you need a charter place we may be able to help you find a place. If you would like more details please visit our clubs website www.pbsbac.co.uk or PM/email me Regards Martin
  2. Take a look on this forum you will find some info there Martin
  3. Roy You may be better joining a local club, I think there are quite a few around the Portsmouth/Southampton area. I belong to Poole bay Small Boat A/C and we have a few none boat owning members who are only to willing to crew when needed. We also crew for each other for company, safety and of course sharing costs. I would guess other clubs have a similar set up. We also have a forum and in that forum is a section to ask for boat buddies. When I ask for crew I also ask for a contribution to fuel and why not. We as boat owners should not be expected to pay for others leisure time no matter how good a friend they are. Space on a small boat is at a premium and if we have to pay for it all I for one would rather use it all with the exception of my son, 24 years old but still has deep pockets lol. As far as I am aware it is not illegal to share costs although the men in grey suits would tax us for breathing if they could Until then carry on breathing and sharing costs. Hope this helps Martin
  4. Hi and welcome to AN I would suggest you do a search for "boat angling clubs" on the south coast, there must be a few near you that are hopefully friendly and able to show you the ropes I would put a few links here but am not sure if we are allowed to promote other club sites? 6. Have not really thought about the cost of my fishing but when I do it gets frightening. I am a small boat fisherman so excluding the cost of the boat, trailer and electronics depreciation + replacement costs and maintenance here goes. I average say 20 trips per year if I’m lucky so breaks it down to per trip = Annual launching fee divided by 20 = £17.50 Fuel to tow boat to mark say average = £7.50 Insurance for boat per year divided by 20 = £12.50 2 sets of rods and reels renewed say every 2 years = £7.50 Terminal tackle and the other little bits = £4.00 Fuel for boat average spend £50.00 Bait = £10.00 low because of mackerel in summer months Oil for fuel = £ 1.00 Food and dink = £5.00 £1 first fish bet I always loose just joking Total cost exclusive of boat and equipment purchase and depreciation £110.50 per trip Guys don’t let the misses see this thread we will definitely be bared from ever going fishing again Martin
  7. Steve Have a look at the anka yanka site http://www.anchoryanka.com/anchor1.htm follow through the stages of anchor retrieval. Retrieving your anchor is one of the most dangerous manoeuvres you can undertake in a small boat. Much better to learn from another small boater who has actually used the Alderney ring method and know the pitfalls. Ask locally or enquire at your nearest small boat A/C for advice. Martin
  8. Leon Sorry forgot to say brilliant post, food for thought. I too return most fish I catch but am not adverse to taking the odd fish for the table. Martin
  9. quote: but in some just up the road I here of allegations of cheating and fistycuffs most matches.Who in their right mind would want to belong to such a club? it beggars belief As you say probably not a good idea to start another thread especially if some members can get a bit passionate Martin
  10. quote: In a highly competative club with open boundaries or at least boundaries of 100 mile or so you often find yourself fishing alone sometimes at the bottom of huge cliffs (its fantastic). Catch and return along with trust really aint an option.Would disagree with that statement. If it’s a club match with no money involved then why not trust members? If you cant trust them they shouldn't be in your club. Our club doesn’t even have weigh ins for club comps. All our club comps are based on a points system with all fish being returned. The angler reports his catch to the fish recorder which is entered in the catch book and their reports are taken as gospel. If anyone cheats they are only deceiving themselves. If it’s an open comp with cash involved then it is slightly different but why not hold it on a best specimen basis. Our club does this and limits each competitor to weigh in one fish (best specimen) holding comps this way also helps spread the prize table. It amazes me that there are still clubs around that insist on heaviest bag comps surely the 2 alternatives above or variations on those themes are better for the reputation of our sport. Martin
