  1. You must be chufffed with that...it's a thing of beauty

Be good to see the pics when it's finished

Are you going to produce batches to sell?

I am pleased with how it's going, I might just need to reduce the weight a little bit. I'll post some pics with a write up when it's finished.

As for producing batches, I have got a few that I'm making alongside this one that I'll finish as soon as I'm happy with the prototype.

Beautiful! Just don't take it out when it's rainy...or muddy...or overcast, just in case it rains... ib fact just give it to me and I'll make sure it stays nice and safe :D

I'll put one buy for you  .

  2. I just thought I'd show you a picture of a centrepin I've been making for myself. This is an earlier photo and does not show it assembled with the reel foot and centre retaining screw. I've still got to sort out the ratchet mechanism and handles, but hopefully shouldn't be too long now.

  3. When I was at college in Hertford I remember being driven to a gravel pit of quarry not too far away, where the largest of the pits had some decent carp in and a smaller lake next to it was stuffed full of golden rudd. Can anybody think where that might have been? I have a vague feeling it could have been on the Welwyn road but I could be completely wrong. The college lake had some very strange hybrids in that were seemed to be part rudd, but god knows what else. They were like greeny-bronze herrings.

Peter how long ago was that, it sounds a bit like rib valley lakes which are about 3 miles outside Hertford. There is also a group of lakes a bit further but not too much, that the Turnford consortium run, not bad fishing apparently.

I have read somewhere befor about those fish in the college pond, it might of been on here somewhere.

Puzzled, Stanborough lake and Fairlands don't allow night fishing unfortunately. Stanborough is good for bream and carp and some good perch, barbel and chub can be caught in the river lea alongside the lake, especially in the evening when the crowds start to thin out (can get very busy on the weekends and school holidays).

  4. Thanks Andy,

I will give them a try, I had already found Bayford but not had a chance to try it yet

    Cheers for the advice.

I tried booking Bayford a couple of weeks ago and they were fully booked for a few weeks so if I were you I'd not leave it till the last moment.

  5. I wonder if anyone can suggest any good night fishing lakes in Hertfordshire, i am not looking for syndicate lakes.

When it comes to carp fishing i can say i am very good at blanking :schmoll: but getting better, so preferebly a lake that is not too hard...

Any tips for suggested lakes would be good too.

    Angelo

Hi Angelo, Holwell Hyde in Welwyn Garden City is not too far from you or you could try Bayford Lake, Near Hertford. Both allow nights.

You could also try Rib valley Lakes. They do night fishing on their specimen lake and I believe they allow night fishing on the trout lake in the summer when they stop the fly fishing. The bigger 30lb carp are in the trout lake, but expect a few blanks as there is fewer in there.

    Andy.

  6. Hi Jigotai

Was there for a few hours first thing Sunday morning (peg 1) lots of small roach but not a lot else bit disappoiniting really but the water is still cold all the fish I caught were freezing cold, bit more of this sunshine should liven them up a bit. I had some great roach there last year and also some good rudd.

Might be there this weekend but I am afraid it is also Ware Beer Festival this weekend so could end up anywhere if you know what I mean.

There did not seem many fly fisherman there this weekend for some reason, the fly lake is well worth a coarse fish later in the year when you are allowed to do so, there are some massive roach in there.

    Hi Gorton,

I didn't manage to get out in the end, the wife had me decorating, am going to try this weekend.

I usually fish to the right on the river side near the car park for the trout lake. Like you, I have had some nice roach and rudd, I also had a shoal of perch to about a 1 lb visit my swim the last time I was there.

I think I'll give the fly lake a go in the summer, the carp boys tend to struggle for the carp there but targeting the roach or tench should be rewarding.

  7. Have a look at Rib Valley Lakes just north of Hertford (just off A10) its got a website.

Not a fluff chucker myself I fish the coarse lakes there but I think it has got a pretty good reputation certainly seems popular throughout the season.

    Their website is here.

Hi Gorton, I also fish there occasionally, mainly on the millenium lake for silvers. Was thinking of taking my son there sometime over the easter holidays. Maybe I'll bump into you sometime.

I don't flyfish there myself either but as you say, it does seem popular.

  8. I'd like to get myself my first catfish this year, well maybe a kitten rather than a big moggy.

If anyone has any ideas of where to get one Im open to ideas of places to go

I'm going to try Bayford lake for catfish as soon as it warms up. Another place, that I believe has catfish is Holwell court. Both lakes are very close to me.

  9. I too like the close season.

As Steve said, little to do with conservation of stocks, (the spawning season changes from year to year).

But I like the feeling of the 16th, (an old sentimentalist). The banks have become overgrown again, it's almost like fishing a 'virgin' water. The flora and fauna have had a break, and I have a chance to do all those things I put off until later. It's a tradition I like, and if I had my way it would apply to stillwaters as well.

But some of the fish in todays waters, wouldn't survive on the natural food supply in there, it has to be topped up by anglers.

If the close season is ever abolished completely, then I feel it will be mainly for financial and selfish reasons, regardless of any other considerations.

    John.

    Hi John,

I too believe in the closed season, but not in as far as stopping fishing altogether for three months. It makes me fish the lakes which I don't do much of during the open season.

I think it is good for the fish to lay off the bait put in for them for a few months...... a bit like a diet, it must be good for them to eat a bit of natural food occasionally.

Not sure on the financial side of things because there is two sides to this. If there was no close season the retailers I think would benefit, but in the close season the comercial lakes must benefit from the extra customers they get. It's a difficult one to call.

  10. I really do hate to be a spoilsport, but after years of making a mess with bait making and stinking the house out, I've come to the conclusion that you are far better off investing in a bag of high quality commercially made baits and using hemp, corn, maize, chick peas and/or Vitalin as the attractors.

I think some of the bait companies well and truly conned many people a few years ago (with the help of certain "celebrity" anglers), into thinking that carpet bombing with fifty quid's worth of expensive bait per session was the only way to go. If you want to go down that route then good luck to you, but I honestly think that the intelligent use of maize, chick peas or even tiger nuts (which personally, I've never caught a damned thing on) will catch you more fish than knocking up what are quite likely to be very poor boilies made from cheap ingredients.

Just a personal opinion you understand.

Peter, not a spoilsport at all, I agree with what you have said.

I wasn't the person that asked the original question. I just didn't feel the recipes that were given were that 'home made' as all the ingredients were from bait companies.

  11. Anyone out there using Matrix hot head swingers ? Do you know what size the isotope is that fits the standard heads on these ?

    Hi Kestrel,

Most standard Isotopes fit but they need to be glued in. If you have any trouble give matrix a ring on 01992 448003.

  12. Very nice, well done!

I'm really glad I got out on Sunday and caught my end-of-season barbel; I'd have been gutted to see yours today if I hadn't at least tried.

Concerning spawn, some of my roach and dace were full of it, but my barbel wasn't (male, perhaps) and none of my chub were. Best chub was only about 2lb, though, which is small for that stretch, and the bigger fish were nowhere to be seen. Perhaps shoaling up for spawning somewhere?

It was seeing the picture of your barbel yesterday that convinced me I had to go out last night :D

  13. Thanks guy's, it was the icing on the cake for what has been a very enjoyable season for me.

I'm not sure if that's a 'boily belly' or spawn, but the chub I caught the other day were the same. The river is not heavily fished so I doubt that's the problem. There's a garden centre nearby and people feed the ducks a lot so they may be picking up food from there.

  14. With only a couple of days left of the fishing season I decided to squeeze in one last session. Tuesday and Wednesday were out so it had to be last night .

I finally got home from work about 6 O’clock, which just about gave me time to pack my gear, get down the river and set up before it was dark.

I’ve enjoyed fishing this river over the last couple of seasons especially this season where I have increased my barbel pb a few times. This session I was hoping for a barbel or even a nice chub to round the season off, but all was not going well.

I started off using lob worms as I had some luck with them last week when I caught some nice chub. I was getting some knocks but nothing that came to anything. I decided to have a change of bait and put on a piece of frankfurter sausage that I grabbed from the fridge before I left, thinking that if I didn’t fish with it I could always eat it. This produced a couple of bigger knocks that looked promising but due to having my hands in my pockets at the time, I missed them.

It went quiet and I was starting to get cold so I decided to bait up one last time. I put a nice piece of sausage on and cast out, I then chopped up the rest and threw it in around my bait as freebies. Nothing happened for a while so I started to pack my gear up, then suddenly out of the corner of my eye I saw my rod being pulled round quite violently. I scrambled over to my rod only to see it go limp. I wound my line in and found my bait gone, this was bad news as I had just thrown the last of it in as freebies.

Now that I new I had something decent in my swim there was no way I was leaving, so I unpacked my bag and dug out some pellets I had tucked away.

I cast back to the same spot and it wasn’t long before I had another take. This was another good one and I actually felt the fish this time, but the hook didn’t take.

It was getting late and it was time to call it a night and admit defeat, but again, I decided on one last cast(this decision has got me in trouble with the wife many times, I’m sure I’m not the only one).

An hour later I was shivering and I hadn’t had a touch, I was just about to get up when my rod tip whipped round. This time I was on it like a shot and it was hooked. It steamed off down stream and was pulling line off my reel all the time. I gently tightened the clutch and managed to stop it before it reached some snags. It seemed to be coming back quite nicely, then, when it was about 10 feet away from me it went off on another charge. This went on for a few more minutes until I finally slipped my net under a beautiful 8 1/4lb Barbel, a PB to finish the season off :clap2: :clap2: . It was in lovely condition and had quite a belly on it. See below.

  15. Hi Newt,

That certainly looks like a good example of an original aerial and with, what looks like it’s original box, but it does seem a little over priced.

You said it all by saying the bidder had got into a bidding war, been there myself.

Personally I wouldn’t beat myself up over it and would enjoy owning a nice reel.

Out of curiosity Newt, how popular are centrepin reels in the states. A guy I make parts of centrepin reels for makes a wide drum version of the Alcocks Aerial which he says you guys use for salmon. Or do they end up mainly in collections.

    Andy.

  16. Martin, if the spools from ABU 506 will fit let me know, I've got loads and you'd be welcome to some at no cost except postage.

    Ian

Was wondering the same as I made a few for my own 506 and still have a few spares.

Martin, if you have a problem finding a spare spool give me a PM and I might be able to make a couple up for you. Will need a spool to work from though.

    Andy
