  1. This macro lense is alot of fun. Not the best photos that follow but they really do tell a story... Sleep tight
  2. Finally got my Tamron 90mm macro lense and had a play about with it. Very hard to get good in focus shots - although I wasn't using a tripod. Going to take some practice for sure. Comments welcomed as always.. Dinnertime! Ever seen this before? And you though it was caterpillars...
  3. Info as follows CJS2 - not sure how much of it is of use The lense was the Sigma 70-300 DG APO (with macro on) - this does a maximum of 1:2. I've literally just ordered a Tamron 90mm 1:1 macro lense which will allow me to get alot closer / better magnification. Should be fun File size: 138136 bytes File date: 2006:06:27 11:48:59 Camera make: NIKON CORPORATION Camera model: NIKON D50 Date/Time: 2006:06:26 20:35:26 Resolution: 698 x 702 Flash used: Yes (auto, return light detected) Focal length: 300.0mm (35mm equivalent: 450mm) Exposure time: 0.050 s (1/20) Aperture: f/25.0 Whitebalance: Auto Metering Mode: center weight Exposure: Manual Exposure Mode: Auto bracketing
  4. Hi all, Couple more i've taken recently. The damsel was a few weeks ago but I never posted a decent shot. The other..was after the rain yesterday, was just playing about but quite liked it. Thanks for looking!
  5. Thanks for the replies. Steve - yes I did see the thread. Only problem is that Jessops are £80 more on the lens I'm after than most other online places. Shame really. The lens is £280ish elsewhere and £360 at Jessops for exactly the same one. Looks like it'll be Warehouse Express then
  6. lol. Fair comment. Prob is i'm at work so not easy to use for personal stuff. Guess I'll wait until I get home then
  7. Ferrett, My point was (that I didn't make very clear ) was that Jessops sell this lens for £80 more than OTHER online outlets. I know they will honour the price if it's cheaper on their website than it is in their shop but wonder if they honour it If I show that I can order it alot cheaper elsewhere.
  8. Hi again, Would anyone like to share their good / bad experiences of online camera stores? I'm just looking into a few items and always believe word of mouth is worth alot in these circumstances. Thanks
  9. Mr Wiggly - nice shots there. Excellent sunset. The damselfly pic is nice and sharp - did you shoot it at high enough resolution for it to survive a crop? Rabster good shots there too - do you have a dedicated macro lense? ..and what on earth is that beetle - I've not seen anything like that before :0
  10. Hi all, Does anyone have experience of Jessops' price promise? Reason I'm asking is that I'm after a Macro Lense that most websites have listed for £280. Jessops have it listed at £360. I could order it online but it's always difficult to have someone there for delivery. I know Jessops will honour differences between their site and their shops but was wondering If I printed out a couple of examples do you reckon I have a chance getting it at that price? Thanks in advance
  11. Hi all, I'm back with more questions I have a Nikon D50 with the standard 18-55 Nikon lens and also have a Sigma 70-300 APO (with the macro option) I'm trying to work out my best way forward for macro choices. I think(!) I have the folliwng choices but am curious if others have tried them and their comments please. 1 - Screw in close up lens like the Nikon 6T which fits to the front of my lens. Would this work with my Sigma? 2 - Extension tubes? Would these make my current Sigma lens able to focus close and therefore increase the size of my subject. The Sigma does a 1:2 ratio which is Ok but not close enough for what I'd like to do - insect macros. 3 - Forget the above and go with a dedicated macro lense. This is the more costly but better results option. I have my eye on the Tamron SP 90mm F2.8 DI 1:1 AF Macro for Nikon - which is about £280. Much appreciate any help here please.
  12. Mr Wiggly, it's a mixture of everything at the moment as I'm still learning. I was messing about for about 15 minutes, had I longer then I would have tried alot more different options. Auto bracketing... it does . I'll recheck the book to see how I should do this. I do have a demo version of Paint Shop Pro X which I've played around with. Looks like you've proved there's a lot more I can do there. Something else to learn Thanks for the comments guys.
  13. Hi all, My latest attempts at ok photos follow. Had my D50 about 3 weeks now and still a hell of a lot to learn. As always constructive criticism / feedback always appreciated. Highly scientific argument in the office about this..Fly or Bee? Young bluetit taken at weekend. This was as sharp as I could get it and when checking the exif info i realised im hand shooting at 450mm which may be pushing my luck. Tripod should be with me in next few days though. Also was under a tree so a little dark. Weeds never looked so good. Oystercatcher chick taken on Alderney with my old 2800Zoom. Camera was out already when happened to see this little chap. Quick pic then left him alone. Sunset at Raz island..a little large I think I'll cut this down later Thanks for looking!
  14. That sounds like great service. I've only just started using them and not yet online so always good to hear. Interested to know how delivery was done. Was it Post Office or courier? Which Sigma lense did you get by the way?
  15. Thanks for the replies. CJS2 - not that I can see it doesn't. It has 3 connections - and checking the Dpreview site it says it has - • USB 2.0 (Hi-Speed) * • Mass storage / PTP selectable • Video out • DC-IN (optional AC adapter) Poledark - Interesting idea. Are you using a D50 also? In which case I assume you've checked out the remote situation and a straight cable connection as CJS2 isn't possible with this model?
  16. I'm not normally a fan of anything mechanical / industrial but that's pretty impressive.
  17. Thanks for that Argyll. I find that a bit poor really. I'm interested in insect macro shots so the timer isn't going to be that effective. I can see myself having to focus then use the remote from the front. I assume i'll be able to use it pretty close but what a hassle. This is the one thing I've found with my D50 where it prompts a .."what were they thinking??"
  18. Simple question really - can anyone tell me if this thing works from behind the camera? Reading the instructions on my D50 it shows the sensor at the front of the body. I particularly want to use this with macro shots so I don't really want to be having to "shoot at" the camera from the front. Anyone help please? Thanks
  19. Ok ABM, hope to see you there. I've already arranged a meet up with Mark from Alderney Angling .We are going to use his guide skills for an afternoon also to show us around a bit more than we've managed to explore so far.
  20. My old point and shoot digi was quite slow on this also. I think they have improved a fair bit. I've just bought a Digi SLR (Nikon D50) and there is no noticeable shutter lag at all. Is your camera a newish one? I'm curious as this has always been a niggle with digi cameras and would have thought they'd got round it by now.
  21. Hi, I'm in Alderney next week so If you happen to be there and see a couple of blokes fishing - come and say hi. Normally there's hardly anyone about so there's a fair chance it may be me. Will post a trip report on return and also a review of the Penn Rod Rubes that i'll be using to get our gear there. BTW, first name is Toby - shouting Eatlard! down a beach may get you some strange looks
  22. Cameraman, Resized as suggested The first image is the only one that loads for me also, not sure if theres some restriction on the site or not, I linked them all in the same way. I'll see if I can work out what's going on there
  23. Had a lovely day Saturday at Drusillas Zoo Park. Not normally my kind of thing but as we were lent some kids for the day I thought I'd try out my new Nikon D50 with the Sigma 70-300 lense. I'm pretty new to this but took around 160 photos. I've attached a few I liked best. I post the otter picture, not because it was good but because this was taken through rather smeared glass windows, as were many other photos and I still got some reasonable shots. If the glass puts you off normally I'd say forget that! take the camera anyway. Oh and every one was hand held. I can post more details of each if anyone is interested. I was rather playing with settings so it could be all over the place Constructive criticism always welcomed. No idea what this first one is. Followed by I really liked the eye detail on this next one - And just had time to snap this - although it's only half in sun I was pleased with the outcome.. Edited to add the Meerkat Thanks for looking!
  24. CJS2, Many thanks for thye reply, it's starting to make more sense. The lense is "locked" at almost max for the macro function to work and I found this morning that the lense itself has a "locked " setting of F22 which I may play around with a bit to see what happens. I certainly could use a decent book, looks like next stop is Amazon. Any books you can recommend? Thanks again Eatlard.
  25. I finally settled on a Nikon D50 and a Sigma 70 - 300 Lense with Macro ability. I've been out having a play and am finding it difficult to get a certain area all in focus at once. Its hard to explain so I thought I'd just post a couple of pics taken on the Sigma lense with the macro option on. My question is how do i expand the area in focus? I took alot of shots of the Damselfly and I think I got 1 where the entire insect was in focus. Re-reading that perhaps I should explain more. As you probably guessed Im new to this . Using the damselfly picture as example - there was no way I could get the entire insect in focus without backing right out, it seemed I had a very small focusable area that was smaller even than the damselfly. This doesn't really make sense to me as although it's the macro function I'm using, the area in which I can focus in relation to the frame as a whole is very small. The booklet that came with the camera is next to useless btw, very basic. I'm thinking i need to increase my Depth Of Field - which is a function that the camera doesnt have a button for (I know some do). I guess I'm asking how I attain this using the settings I can control. Any help greatly appreciated No fun attaching the pictures so I've uploaded elsewhere, hopefully this will behave and
