  1. Hi Guys, Has anyone here tried to make a kayak? I have a Prowler 13 and a Scupper Pro but I was wondering If anyone could advise me how to make a surfing style kayak to play in the surf. I know its not entirely fishing orrientated. Its just for a summer project to see if it can be done. I have started to design the boat and have gathered a large block of Dense Polystrene. I also have fibreglass and Expoxy. The idea is to make a kinda of SOT surfing style boat similar to OK Frenzy in shape. I would appreciate any help you may be able to offer. Thanks, Mick
  2. Yeah I know - no worries lads! I didn't take offence at all Mick
  3. I don't know if this is a stupid question but do any of you guys insure your boat under your house insurance. I have my kitesurfing gear on it so why not they yak? Just incase it goes walkies or the garage goes on fire etc etc. I would like to hear what you have to say on this matter, Regards, Mick
  4. I didn't take it personally just messing about as well. I forgot to put the Smilies in. Mick
  5. When something is moving faster it makes it easier to stay on a bike or a kiteboard. I didn't make it up! Click here for a defintion Mick
  6. I have a pair of these for kitesurfing, they are designed for baord users so you can stay on the board and maintain a better balance before dynamic balance kicks in when your moving. They are called superfreaks and are a good job. Mick
  7. Hey Dan, I made a small boat out of Marine Ply last year that was orignially designed for my dads tender. It was a winter project. My dad wanted it to repair the gel coat along side his yacht but after he used it I used to pull my Dog along in it in the River near us. I never took it out on the ocean / sea for fear of it sinking, although I always carried a sharp knife for cutting it off in a emergency lol. I don't think it would be very safe though to be using something like for yaking / fishing epescially in the ocean plus it affects the performance of the paddling boat so much and is like pulling an oil tanker behind you. I was using it in 4 ft of water so if it did sink I could wet exit and get to safety (stand up). It depends on the design of the "tub" idealy an open top canadian canoe would be the safest but its quite large. I have thought of pulling something behind the prowler too on many occasions as well though! Mick
  8. Don't I know it, after lifting it, and cursing a bit trying to get it to car height, I have decided to buy the C-Tug trolley. Its ok lifting it stationary, but carrying it over rocks and boulders would be deadly! Cheers Guys
  9. It came Guys, after days and days of waiting, ringing the company I ordered it off, and ringing couriers it finally came. Here is my P13 NZ flame. Richi you were right mate, it does look cool! I can't use it till I get my new roofrack, my present one won't support this baby! Mick
  10. My fav is the Dexter wedge, always works from the rocks. Its the first I am going to try. Mick
  11. Cool Yakerbass, Hopefully I get my P13 NZ Flame 2moro! I waited all day today on the couriers comming, watching for big vans and lorrys incase they got lost. Even thought a bout making a giant sign at the top of my lane saying Kayak this way Lol. It feels like Christmas when I was a kid. Im so excited. Your P15 looks sweet! Mick
  12. I might be up for this too if the date is right and im not working in Boston. I would be prepared to travel down no probs im based in County Down. Mick
  13. Hey guys, I was browsing through ebay when I was supposed to be working today and came across this: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ocean-kayak-sit-on-t...1QQcmdZViewItem Is this book any good for a beginner to SOTS but not to SINK. I have good experience in SINK boats < 13feet. The launching of my new SOT is going to be a learning curve. To launch the sit in boats we just beached it on a river bank and slid in and pushed ourselfs out after fitting the spray deck. I maybe should have bought this prior to buying my prowler 13 but does anyone think it would be a good investment now? Oh and one more thing do I need Polarised Specs for kayaking? I never really had the need for them whilst kitesurfing but maybe sitting lower to the water for longer periods could burn your retinas out (lol) plus correct me if im wrong but it reduces the water's natural refraction so that fish and rocks can be seen more clearly!??? Mick
  14. Lol nope im no short ar#e. Do you have any pics of your flame p13 that you could send me to look at till mine gets here. Thanks Mick
  15. Just driving a wee polo mate, maybe upgrade at a later date, thinking of buying a focus tdci sport. At the minute I got the thule aero bars. Got everything footpacks, fixing kit and bars for £99 brand new from the NI rep. I think i will just lift "The flame" up on to the car its not really that high. (I hope) Cheers Mick
  16. Cheers Richi, those pics inspired confidence again, I did pick the right boat! Cheers guys.
  17. GreyWulff my email is mickey_forster @ btinternet . com - your personal inbox seems to be full I tried to send you a PM (just remove the spaces in the email address) As far as tope are concerned Strangford Lough is supposed to be full of them, I always hear the boat anglers talking of taking big tope at the bar mouth of the lough but I have never seen one yet. My claim to fame is 52lb conger in Ardglass at night. Scary Bickies. I didn't wanna remove the hook from that monsters mouth. Pure fluke tho. If you ever up and about and im free I would be sure to go for a paddle or fish in the area. Oh and your nickname for my newly aquired Prowler might just stick. I might just christen her "The OK Flamer" (If you see on any other forums or know of any or "Northerners" as you call us that kayak fish, point me in their direction. I need to find a paddle buddy to go out fishing with around here.) Good Luck, Mick
  18. Ha ha nice one Wulff, are you refering to the size of my Rod? (Fishing Rod that is) Mick
  19. Lol, my girl would kill me if I would suggest taking my new kayak on holidays, my kite and board were bad enough in Fuerte last year! What is the colour of your yak? Is that Sunset? The guy in CanoeKayakTrader.com told me that I could take my pick and once he said that I couldn't think of what I wanted. I hope I don't regret the flame. He said its very bright! Mick
  20. Sorry to hear about your Carolina, looks like a class SINK. A seal bit my filpper whilst diving off rocks in kicllief once but I think it was just protecting her pups. They are very inquistive and will approach when they are in the water. Which do you prefer your Sink or SOT? I know thats a very general question cos they both have differnet advantages and disadvantages but just curious. Mick
  21. Hey Guys Just ordered my new P13 NZ model in flame. Ordered from canoe kayak trader: http://www.canoekayaktrader.co.uk/ excellent service and customer service. I get the boat on Wednesday! Woohoo! Mick
  22. Greywullf, I tend to fish a little bit lighter with just a standard spinning rod, and/or maybe a beachcaster. Don't know what makes they are. The were not overall expensive. I am more interested in the paddling element touring around the cliffs but if I find a nice location I whip out my rod (lol). If I am fishing I use either plugs or dexter wedges and have caught one really nice sized bass, loadsa mackeral, loadsa pollock and some weird wee thing that I don't know what it is. (possibly down to sellafield and the Irish sea). The odd time I have fished with Sandeels and Squid, maybe peeler crab if I can get some and caught a few doggies oh and Octopus once too!!!!??!! I like to travel light and always catch and release - like watching them swim away. I caught a massive conger from the rocks and I never want to catch one when im on the kayak. I use a wetsuit nearly all the time, its the same one I use for kitesurfing and i find that it doesn't really restrict my movement that much or cos too much fatigue. Its good for bouncing off and snorkelling down with weights to retrieve lost lures if the sea is slight. If the weather is cold or rainy I would wear my diving drysuit though its for short inland bay trips only, it tires you quickly. If your up North sometime with your yak, or else the wind blew you off course too much call into to Strangford (joking!) and I see if we can go for a paddle, just private message me through this and I see if we can meet. Hope that helps.
  23. Im Up North @ Strangford If anyone sees this topic and would like to go for a paddle / fish Mick
  24. Thanks Guys, I have the thule aero bars but can't find out if its compatiable with them or not. Oh and I did notice that its listed twice but thought it was two different items using same picture just (??) Scammer? Thanks man Mick
