  1. I did not mean that i thought people on here wanted a complete ban on kayaking/canoeing only that it seemed that some people thought if a river was used for angling then there was no way that canoeing/kayaking would be able to use it as well and therefore why should a right canoist/kayakers have a right to access. As for wanting total right to roam i still think that the BCU are pushing that as a way to get more access because they know they're not going to get 100% right to roam but may be offered 60% as opposed to asking for 60% and getting 20%.

  2. Trouble is, Bob, that on some waters, access for canoes means no fishing. That's not my idea of live and let live, that's do what you like and sod anyone else.

Would you support the automatic right to take the dogs for a swim in match angler's pegs on commercials?

this is why i said anglers and canoists/kayakers should be able to share some not all waters as i agree there are some waters where the two activites would not mix however neither do i think that just blanketly denying them access is fair either it should be simply a case of compromise and courteous behaviour between the two parties.

As for the argument put forward earlier in an earlier post that we(the anglers) were there first then in the case of the canals your wrong as these were built as transportation networks firstly so does that mean that all fishing should be banned from them? as for rivers well they were also almost certainly used for transport before they were used for pleasure(catch & release) angling as well.

  3. As a kayaker and angler (mainly sea however)i can see both points of view, i also think the BCU are campaigning for free access to all rivers knowing they won't get it but hoping to increase the number of rivers they do have access to, its an old ploy used by the unions all the time ask for a 50% payrise but settle on 25% instead of asking for 25% and getting 10. I think as long as both sides are courteous then there should be no problem with both anglers and canoists sharing some(not necessarily all) of the same waters.

the problem i see is that very few people these days know how to be courteous to their fellow river/canal users and that a lot of people as a whole(both anglers and canoists/kayakers included) think they have a god given right to do as they please without thought or consequence to anyone else.

As for paying the landowners for the right to fish i thought(please correct me if i'm wrong as i'm unsure of this) that anglers actually pay for the right to gain access to the river over the landowners property as the landowner does not actually own the water that flows over the land but owns the right to cross his land to access said water via the banks, however if a kayaker was to access that same river from a public area why should he then pay the landowner when he actually isnt setting foot (or canoe/kayak) upon the landowners property.

Either way i don't think signing any of these petitions will do a lot of good as the govenment is still considering the possiblity of road charging and that was after 1.8 million people signed a petition against it.

  4. Imagine by john lennon. makes me want to puke everytime i hear it, sentimental sh*te.

or possibly the re-release of candle in the wind for princess di which is also cringe worthy crap of the highest degree.

by the way Joe Dolce was born in america not australia but i will agree shaddupa your face was bl**dy awful.

  5. I'm the do-gooder, strange i'm not the one advocating getting involved in other countries policies to save a few dolphins i'm also not the one who believes we went into iraq to save their kids from the republican guard, but hell you are right about one thing though, f**king do-gooders really do your head in.

Anyway i'm with you steve walker no point in trying to have a reasonable discussion about these things so this will be my last comment on the subject.

  6. And my point was not about dolphins, it was about how we would react to other cultures judging us by their own standards. Hindus telling us that it's evil to kill cows. Jews telling us that it's Just Wrong to eat pigs. Muslims setting up a petition to get us to give up alcohol. Mormons demanding we quit coffee. Amazonian hunter gatherers telling us that farming is immoral and we shouldn't keep animals in captivity. PETA members telling us not to fish. We'd tell them to get stuffed, because our culture and upbringing tells us that those things are normal and acceptable.

This is the point i've been trying to make. we are trying to force our morals and beliefs onto an entirely different culture in their own country and i don't think its right to do so.

  7. And there have been many dictators who have committed genocide in other countries, with other cultures. They could also have told us to sod off and mind our own business. Whether we see things differently or not, it's still bloody wrong! How many ordinary Japanese people would find that sort of thing equally offensive? Most of them I'd say.

Right and wrong is difficult to determine as one of the major factors contributing to your view of right or wrong is what culture your brought up in and what its definition of what is morally right or wrong is, your opinion that it is wrong to kill these dolphins is the same as most western peoples opinions would be, however its not necessarily the same as the opinion of someone from the far east who has been bought up in a culture with a whole different view of whats right or wrong. there are things that the japanese would view as being morally wrong about our society and culture but does this give them the right to demand that we change to suit them and would we listen even if they did.As for most ordinary japanese finding the killing of dolphins as offensive as we do i think if you asked them you may be surprised by the answer.

  8. the question was raised if anyone had the crime rate comparisons for the UK and japan & i've supplied them as i said i was not excusing the mass killing of dolphins however as i stated you are looking at a completely different culture to the UKs and the west in general and as such trying to judge them by western standards is not always the ideal situation. Yes you can raise petitions and try to alter their way of life and culture but don't be surprised if they tell you to s*d off when you do(a bit like the spanish would do if you told them to stop bull fighting and a bit like the fox hunters have done to the govenment in this country).

On a personnal note i don't agree with what they're doing but am not sure we have the right to tell them to change their way of life and culture to suit our moral beliefs.

  9. Lets Nuke them and be rid of the problem  or..

Ask questions about why our guys were many time zones away meeting Japanese soldiers on islands on the other side of the world.

Atlantic in all its glory and possibilities is one way, or continue to pretend the world map is red and we therefore have the right to tell everyone else what to do and how live is another.

Anyone got figures on a comparison of crime rates between Japan and the UK? The "murder" of dolphins excluded of course ;)

Or perhaps the western nation of Faroe, where they also slaughter pilot whales by means that would upset the average Brit?

I get confused sometimes; is the modern UK role still to tell everyone else how to live?

Osama would feel at home here imho ;):D

just for those interested here are some crime statistics comparisons.

    murder rates per 100,000 population

    japan: 1.1

    UK: 9.1

    Rape per 100,000

    japan: 1.48

    UK:14.69

    Serious assault per 100,000

    japan:15.40

    UK:405.20

    robbery/violent theft per 100,000

    japan:1.3

    UK:65.8

    robberies solved by police

    japan 75.9%

    UK 26.5%

    murders solved by police

    japan 94.4%

    UK 78.8%

figures based on years 1990 & 1998 (only years i could find quickly to give matching rates things may have altered slightly)

looking at the figures it makes you wonder who the "barbaric gits" really are especially when you consider that japan has twice the population of the UK. i realise this in no way defends the slaughter of dolphins but it should be recognised that japans culture is in many ways completely different to that of the UKs and shouldn't be judged by UK standards.

  10. i've had emails from people on friends reunited and have been able to read them even though i have never paid for the membership the only thing i found you couldn't do is reply to them because the emails are sent via friendsreunited and don't have a return email address with them.mind you last one i had was last year so maybe things have changed since then.

  11. I'm 6ft and 15 & half stone and have a prowler elite and can highly recommend it. I have had no problem with either room in the cockpit or stability issues. The elite also has the advantage of a preformed recess for the transducer of a fishfinder and also mounting points for a mini kota electric outboard if you feel like adding one.Best thing to do though is try each of the kayaks on your list if you can before you buy one.

  12. doggies go well in curries and they're not bad as fish cakes either, i've never had any problem with ammonia in the flavour either with dogs or rays. As for rock salmon yes some of it is dogfish but alot is also wolf fish a different species entirely.Interestingly a commercial friend of mine told me his local chinese used to buy all the dogfish he could catch but he never bothered asking them what they did with them.

  13. I wouldn't worry too much about the world getting smaller its still a huge planet afterall and there are still mountains left to be conquered and areas still to be explored  . we may perceive the world to be smaller because people have climbed everest and been to the moon and because we see far away places everyday on the news in technicolour but remember it is very few people who have done these extraordinary things it is not a common everyday occurence.only 12 men have ever walked on the face of the moon and of them only 9 are still alive that is a number that will only get smaller over the next few years as we have no manned craft capable of reaching the moon now, infact the grounding of concorde and the cancellation of the apollo program are the only cases i can think of where mankind has taken a technological leap backwards.

Also at least two thirds of the oceans remain unexplored and fewer people have been to the deepest part of the ocean than have walked on the moon. the oceans still hide a great many secrets from us(giant squid have only just been filmed alive and this is a creature that grows up to 60 feet in length so if this can remain unfilmed for so long what else is there to discover in the depths)

distance is a relative thing, i know people who think a fifty mile drive is a long way and needs to be planned in advance while my aunt (who lives in america) thinks nothing of driving 100 miles to go and play bingo for the evening.

  14. I have played bully (or canis canem edit as it has been retitled)and it is as stated in the description very much along the lines of grand theft auto in style (as you would expect from the makers rockstar, why change a winning formula) and as also stated you don't actually play as a bully its more a case of winning over the various groups & gangs by using whatever means possible to complete set missions .As expected from a game with a 15 cert rating there is violence(mainly beating up bullies and other pupils, weapons include stink bombs, fireworks and a catapult)and adult(ish) humour, however it is not as violent as any of the grand theft auto games(no one gets killed) and the violence it does contain pales into insignificance when compared to the highly controversial game manhunt.all in all as long it is a reasonably fun game and doesn't deserve half the controversy that surronds it.

  15. You may already know this but in case you don't if you don't like cold calling by phone try registering your telephone number with TPS once you've done this any company cold calling you from the uk can be fined for doing so, (it doesn't cover cold calls from abroad unfortunately & it also doesn't stop market research calls).

you can also register fax numbers and your mail address to stop direct mail companies sending you mail. info on any of these service can be found at www.tpsonline.org.uk/tps/

As for b***ards who come to your door boiling oil works well but is frowned upon in these enlightened days.

  16. As far as i know any hunting with a bow is illegal in the UK however spearfishing is legal and doesn't require a permit or a licence for the speargun but it is illegal to sell fish caught by this method under EEC law.it is also illegal in non tidal areas of rivers.

  17. very difficult one this as my favourties tend to change with the mood i'm in but heres five in no particular order that would always be in the running whatever the mood.

    1.AC/DC - Back in black

    2.The Cramps - Stay sick

    3.ZZ Top - Eliminator

4.XTC - Fossil Fuel (the best of)

5.The Saw Doctors - Same oul town

  18. as suggested already the people to contact are johnson outdoors as they supply the fishfinder ready gear and are usually very helpful. the transducer is very easy to install once you have the kit.personally I tucked the excess cable beneath the fish finder mounting plate before bolting it down to keep it everything neat and out of harms way and this seems to work a treat.

  19. Interestingly the majority of people in this country are immigrants of one sort or another most being able to trace their roots back only as far as the normans, vikings, anglosaxons or romans very few i think would be able to follow their ancestory right back to the original inhabitants of this country the celts & the picts and even less would have a pure bloodline so think twice before you go hating all immigrants as you may find that actually you yourself are one.

There is good and bad in all walks of life.

  20. I haven't had any problems reading the screen in bright sunlight personally or with glare off the water, but i do wear polarised sunglasses B) while out in the sun and this may make a difference especially by cutting down reflected light off the surronding water.

  21. I have the humminbird 363c combined gps & fish finder with built in multimap and it seems to work exceedingly well  , the only fault i can find with it is that you have to clean the contacts meticulously after each trip or the water temperature sensor seems to act up and vary by up to 10 degrees but this is the only problem i've found so far. They cost about £100.00 less than the 383c so it might be a bit more affordable and as far as i can tell the only difference is a colour screen on the 383.

  22. "and for those people who think that they don't want to live by a nuclear reactor incase something like chernobyl happens it might be worth realising that france has 59 nuclear reactors which provide 80% of their electricity and they're not too far away if anything serious was to go wrong."

The village of Wool, about 2 miles downwind of the Winfrith Heath Nuclear site, is reputed to have the highest childhood leukemia rate in the country.

It's costing more do decommission the site than it did to build it.

From the information i have seen there is no increased risk of cancer or leukemia in the area surrounding winfrith powerstation.

for information see the 11th COMARE report and also bmj report

It appears childhood leukemia clusters occur in many places around the uk not all of them next to powerstations and no-one is sure why they happen but there doesn't appear to be a link between them and the immediate presence nuclear powerstations.

  23. To be honest I have mixed feelings about wind farms as I have read that they take more energy to build in the first place than the amount of electricity they produce in their life-times, in which case why build them.

I do stand to be corrected or argued with.

Other trouble is that the installation will damage the sea-bed for at least ten tears.

The most efficient wind turbines can produce enough energy in nine months to replace the energy it cost to make them however this is running 24 hours a day 365 days days of the year with no disruption in service or down days due to lack of wind.In the last literature that i read on wind farms it was estimated that it would take approximately 44,000 wind turbines running 24 hours a day 365 days of the year once again with no down time to produce enough electricity for the UKs demand. that is perhaps one of the reasons they will never replace nuclear power and for those people who think that they don't want to live by a nuclear reactor incase something like chernobyl happens it might be worth realising that france has 59 nuclear reactors which provide 80% of their electricity and they're not too far away if anything serious was to go wrong.
