  1. On that rod, I'd go with a 6000 size Shimano baitrunner - the best model you can afford.

For coastal fishing with lures, take some 5 and 6' minows like the Bomber Long A (upgrade all of the hooks) and some 4 and 5' shads. For Murrel, pack some size 3 and 4 Mepps as well as a selection of weedless surface lures like moss boss's and scumfrogs. Mahseer require a slightly more specialised aproach.

For bait fishing, go with whatever you're most comfortable with. UK type aproaches may not get you the biggest of fish but you should still catch.

I Have decided to go with the Shimano 6000GTE C Baitrunner.

  2. I can't help but I know a man that can, maybe, I was hoping he may of looked in and saw this as he used to post on here. You need Keith T as he lived out there for some time & still goes out. You may find him on Barble fishing world or if you are a Barbel Society member then he will be on thier site.

  3. Hi,

I will be travelling around Sri Lanka and India early in the New Year and while not primarily a Fishing Holiday I am going to try and get in as much as possible or allowed.

I plan on doing whatever type of fishing I get an opportunity to Salt, Fresh, Bait and Lure, For which I have decided on a Shimano Exage 330 Travel Rod which brings me to my question does any body have any recommendations on a Reel to go with it that would cover most if not all of any circumstances I might find myself in.

    Thanks in Advance

  4. Hi guys I'm new here.

I went fishing yesterday for the first time in years. I decided to go to the canal for my first time so nobody would laugh at me struggling :) I was using a float setup with a size 14 barbless hook and used sweetcorn as my bait. I had also made some groundbait which was breadcrumbs, koi pellets, sweetcorn and strawberry flavour all ground up. I fished for about 2 or 3 hours but didnt catch a thing, not even a bite. Was I just having a rubish day or was I doing something wrong? :)

    Thanks.

Try Maggots on the hook and feeding a few every couple of minutes.

Works for me every time on the canal where I am

  5. I see their are Two Supermarkets close by so be prepared to lose a lot of lures unless you go heavy on the braid as your canal is probably littered with loads of shopping trolleys.

I dont even bother lure fishing any more where I am as it seemed a bit unsportly hauling in Jacks on 50lb braid

  6. A great idea I saw from someone was to just use sticky tape (insulating type stuff) to attach the rod to the frame. This way you don't have to faff around with string etc and other complicated methods of attachment. Just snip it off when you arrive. Obviously you'll have to take a roll with you for the return journey!

A bit wasteful but a nice no-nonsense, hassle-free way of doing it.

I use Reuseable Cable ties absolutely Brilliant invention

  7. Now you know why Jim. It has been discussed before and usually ends with an argument.

I seem to remember one such thread being deleted, (apologies if I'm wrong).

It seems to me that dog owners (a strange term to my mind), assume that everyone feels the same way about dogs as they do. It's assumed that there is something strange about a person that is not a 'dog lover'.

I'm not a dog lover or hater. I don't keep a dog, but some of my friends and family members do. I was brought up with dogs, my uncle used to breed Shetlands (no not ponies), but I don't feel the need for dogs in my life.

I don't appreciate owners who say "It's alright he's friendly", I don't give a damn whether he's friendly, nosey, playing or any other adjective they want to use, I'm fishing and I don't want the attentions of their dog while I'm doing it.

I don't want the dog poking about in my tackle bag, I don't want it licking me, I don't want it peeing on my gear, and I certainly don't want great piles of it's excrement lying in wait for me to sit in, stand in, or put my gear in.

There are times when I visit friends or family and I will play with the dog, take it for a walk, pet it, and all those things that some people cannot last a day without doing. Those things are done when and where I choose, and I don't want someone else to decide when and where that should be.

All it needs is a bit of thought from the person 'in charge' of the dog, and a lot of aggro' can be avoided.

    John.

I could'nt have put it better

You might have more luck asking on an Irish Forum

  9. Why are we having this conversation? Even if they were £10.00 a pint and you went to a Commercial that cost another £10.00 - Where else are you going to have a fantastic day out for £20.00???????

I am not complaining about the price at all, I was just wondering what everyone else pays.

  10. Not a freshwater book but it does touch on it

The Unnatural History of the Sea (the past and future of humanity and fishing)

    By Professor Callum Roberts.

Absolutely fascinating reading anybody remotely intrested in the relationship between man and fish through the ages must read this book IMO.

  11. This thread is really useful!

I'm a little bit of an all rounder though my favourite methods are fly-fishing and light spinning, mostly for Trout, Chub, Perch, Dace and Pike. Though I don't spin for Dace! And so far, I don't fly fish for Pike, this is something I'm keen to try though.

I live in Finchley so I have to travel around a bit, usually fish places like the Regent's Canal and the Wandle, quite like the sound of the Lea and it's navigation channel, Coppermill Stream etc. I'm just wondering whether it would be possible to sight fish there and if there'd be enough room to cast a fly or whether I'd be best off with just the light spinning gear. I suppose I should do a reconnaissance myself, sounds good though from what I've read so far.

    Hi Charley

As far as I am aware there is a fly only trout lake in Walthamstow the one opposite the main entrance. Do you flyfish on the Regents as I have been thinking of giving it a go myself but wouldnt know where to start.

  12. I wish I could find a good specimen perch water with no pike in. How simple that would make things!

Just out of curiosity, when you say 'no pike' do you mean there literally aren't any, or do you mean there are so few that you can use fish baits and be fairly sure that a pike won't pick it up?

I have been told by the park wardens

that their are no Pike in this paticular

pond and I have never seen anyone

    catch one from it either.

  13. Hi All

I had a Perch yesterday that was just shy of 3 lb

that put up one hell of a fight.

I just usually only catch tiddlers of several species

using maggots. So I would like to try targeting the

bigger Perch in the pond and would really appreciate

    any advice on rigs.

There are no Pike in the water.

    Thanks in advance

  14. Hi I am spending X-Mas week in Ilfracombe

and was wondering what the fishing might be

like then. I'm with the Missus so I will probably

be only able to fish the Pier.

    Any feedback is greatly appreciated

    Thanks in advance.

  15. Hi All

I was just thinking about buying one myself not so sure now.

Can anyone offer advice on an easily erected lightweight bivvy

as I dont drive and am reliant on public transport or the trusty pushbike.

I was also looking at a Trakker A lite can anyone offer any advice on it.

The cheapest I've seen it is £89.00 with free delivery.

    Thanks in advance.

    Dave
