  1. k well how about just a big trash bag? like a plastic liner for a rubbish can spread out?
  2. just wondering if putting a carp on a old beach towel would do it any harm? I havent done this yet and wont until i get some feedback from you pros so dont go yelling at me, I'm from the US and they dont sell unhooking mats around here because carp are looked at as just "giant goldfish"
  3. yah budgie i obviously care about fish, i never eat fish or keep any of the ones i catch i'm from the US by the way and I'm mostly a bass angler, the bass fishing in my town has become terrible however so I have taken up catching caro for the time being. I do not eat them but simply catch and release. and of course I wouldnt put a carp or anyother fish on stoney or rocky ground, to me that's disrespecting the fish and the lord that gave us the fish, as you can see in the pic the fish is on a wet muddy surface, not on the board that I'm on and not on some dry land. I respect all the fish that I catch and I'm grateful for every time i get to fight a fish and marvel at it's beauty. I thank you for the tip however and from now on i'll carry a plastic bag that i can lay down and dampen and place the fish on to unhook. I'm not really into buying a bunch of carp gear if I'm going to be fishing for them for a few weeks out of the year. (i dont know if this is looked down upon also but) the carp that i've pulled in dont usually thrash around because I fight them and let them tire themselves out quite a bit. Once they're in I unhook and snap a pic and set them free all within a minute and a half, and all the carp I've caught have swam away with the great strength thanks tho
  4. hey um it's a fish man, and it's not like i stepped on it or impaled it with some object, it laid on land for 3 seconds as i snapped the pic and measured it, i put it right back in the water and it didnt float, it swam off like nothing happened, i didnt even have to do the recouperation method because it took off so fast. I've been fishing all my life and sure carp fishing is new to me but it's not what i usually do, im a bass fisher and know how to not kill a fish or harm it in some way that it wont be able to recover. sheesh, people these days
  5. went back today and got a 31" still no official weight tho, im scared i might hurt them with the hook from the scale lol
  6. hey I was just wondering how long on average the carp are you guys and girls catch over there. And what's the biggest you've ever seen or caught. Yesterday I landed a 32" that we figured to be somewhere near 20lbs. I think it's pretty good for my second carp ever =)
  7. hah thanks guys and yeah i knew abotu the slime thing, i only handled him for a second, just for the picture because of it. I usually put them on so I dont stab myself while removing the hook but thanks for being on the lookout
  8. I dont know if any of you remember but a month ago I was talking about how i found some carp and I was trying to get help on what bait to use and what type of carp I had in my town resevoir. Well here it is. I decided to give it another go yesterday after taking a month break from wasting time on them. Using bread I landed my first carp ever =). I'm thinking it was a little over 10lbs. Around 2ft long. I dont know the weights tho, seeing as I didnt have a scale so it's just a estimate. With your professionalism I'm wondering if someone can give a more accurate guess on the carp's weight. Thanks, and good fishing
  9. over here in the US i think the best bait you can use for common carp is just bread. Caught my first carp today on a doughball ill post the pic tommorrow when my fishing buddy sends me the pic. I think he's pretty jealous so he may not
  10. sounds like the game is awesome and I really want to try it out sadly i cant even get to your site because it says I do not have flash player but when I click "Install Now" to install flash player it says it's all set and yet it still will not let me
  11. Just fast flowing, there's a damn about a mile up the river and little step type things about 1/2 mile down the river, but I've been fishing in the middle where it isnt as fast but still fast
  12. yeah sorry people, they werent grass carp. I went back today and somone was tossing the carp out as the ran up the river. they got 4 total and turned out to be River Carp. Do you really think nothing with bite on that 50lb spiderwire? It's like braided line(green in color) and has the diamter of 12lb line (quite thin). I myself am not even sure if anything big will hit on it but so far I have landed a few medium sized bass with it.
  13. yeah i understood that river carp were just carp that lived in rivers but it looks like Grass carp are almost a whole different type by what I've read. and btw I live in Massachusetts on the east coast of the US. Anyways I went fishing today and wasnt going to try for the carp because I was so sick of them not biting on anything. When i got there , there were a few ppl in my spot and i asked if they'd seen the carp and the guy told me his girlfriend caught one(of course I didnt believe) so he brought me over to where the rest of his family was which was over at a different part that was more a strong river (about 7ft wide and 1.5ft deep and the current was furocious). I looked over and I see this fish on the ground and I checked it out, turns out it's a River Carp and not a Grass Carp. So yah it was about 2ft long and 15lbs, turns out the girlfriend was throwing them out of the river by hand as they tried jumping up the current. In the end she pulled out 4 all around the same size and I took one home to my pond so that I can raise a carp monster muhahahaha. But still I tried fishing for them and they just wont bite, and there are many more bigger than the 2ft ones.
  14. oh great, I've been researching these carp and checking out the different species. Now I'm confused. I dont know what I'm fishing for now. They're either Grass or River Carp. For a while I was pretty sure they were Grass but now I'm not sure. Perhaps my method has been wrong this entire time
  15. Hey everyone I've been reading through most of the posts and I still havent seen any mention of Grass Carp. I'm not sure if you have these in the UK but I suppose you do because they were introduced to mainy places to control aquatic vegetation. Ok anyways back to my point. In my town there's this pond/river and I have found nice sized Carp (well over 2ft long). Grass Carp are more similar to bass in appearance and it is common for them to exceed 4ft 40lbs at adult (some have been found in the 70lb range). Yes so I have tried almost everything to catch these carp. At first I had a 15lb test and I tried bread, the carp took my entire set up and snapped it so I grabbed some 50lb test spiderwire.(NOW IM READY) the only problem is that they wont bite on bread and yet we see them jumping out of the water and surfacing I've tried lettuce, bread, worms(and fake worms), tomatos, celery, cattail, potatos, grapes, apples, beans/peas and still nothing. I'm thinking about trying a meat such as sausage. Does anyone else have any suggestions? Also I'm thinking I might want to make my bait float but im not sure how to rig it (I usually a lure and minnow kinda guy and usually dont try for carp). So if anyone can help please do. thanks
  16. woot first post yeah so the other day i was walking through the woods cuz i got sick of the boring old same fishing hole in my town. and after listening to my dad's stories about all the places he used to fish and the huge fish he'd catch when he was young (obviously i figured he was lieing) but anyways i went for a little search and found a small river (if it does qualify as that... lol it was about 5 ft maximum wide) and as i walked up the banking i noticed fins coming out of the water. so i approached them and as soon as i did the water exploded with splashes and i almost fell over. i never got a good look at them so i tossed in a brown plastic worm, thinking they were trout cuz the river looked like prime trout territory. i pulled out a 15'' smallmouth on my first cast but i knew those werent basss when i first arrived so i tossed the worm out again and all of sudden something takes my hook and drags the thing across the 5 ft river in like 1 second flat and snaps my line, i know this was a fish. cuz when i went up river more i could see the brown shadows of fish in the water and they were huge, im guessing the were carp cuz of how fat they were and by the dorsal fin i saw in the shallow water. anyone know if this is spawning season for carp? and what bait i should use. ive never caught a carp but do they have sharp teeth? im going back to that spot in about 30 minutes to try again
